LOVE IS STRANGE, A 2-CD LIVE SET FEATURING BROWNE AND LINDLEY, IS SET FOR RELEASE MAY 11

Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne will take to the road this summer with his band and longtime friend and musical co-conspirator David Lindley. Comprising dates in the U.S. and Europe, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour follows the May 11 release of Love Is Strange (Inside Recordings), a 2-CD live set capturing a tour of Spain that Browne and Lindley did in 2006.

The Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour begins with a month-long European leg kicking off in Bristol, UK on June 3. Other highlights include shows at the Stadpark in Hamburg, Germany (6/15), Casino de Paris in Paris, France (6/18), and Hampton Court Palace and Royal Albert Hall in London (6/8 and 6/29, respectively). More European dates will be announced shortly.

Stateside, the Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour gets underway July 20 at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. U.S. summer dates run through the end of September; the first U.S. leg concludes at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta on August 15. Highlights along the way include the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles (7/23), the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA (7/24), Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO (8/5), and the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, TX (8/13).
Accompanying Jackson Browne and David Lindley on tour will be Browne’s band of almost 20 years: Kevin McCormick (bass), Mark Goldenberg (guitars), Mauricio Lewak (drums) and Jeff Young (keyboards, backing vocals). They’re joined by members (since 2008) Chavonne Stewart and Alethea Mills, vocalists Browne (as a mentor) met in 2001 when they were attending Washington Preparatory High School in South Los Angeles, singing in the school choir.

On record and in performance, Jackson Browne and David Lindley have a musical association reaching back almost 40 years. Regarded as a legendary stringed-instrument virtuoso, Lindley has played on many of Browne’s albums, beginning with 1973’s For Everyman, and on classics including Late For The Sky and The Pretender (the latter two both on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time). Browne also produced Lindley’s best-known LP, 1983’s acclaimed El Rayo-X.

Prior to 2010’s Jackson Browne with David Lindley Tour, the last time the two musicians played live dates together was a 2006 run of concerts in Spain—in grand concert halls, rock venues, and intimate clubs alike. That tour resulted in the forthcoming 2-CD album Love Is Strange, “En Vivo Con Tino”— featuring Browne and Lindley live with celebrated Spanish percussionist Tino di Geraldo. Set for worldwide release May 11 on Browne’s independent label Inside Recordings, Love Is Strange was produced by Jackson Browne and Paul Dieter.

In liner notes Browne wrote for Love Is Strange, he considers Lindley’s reputation for elusiveness nearly as mythic as his string-playing prowess. “Why had I not thought of this before? Take him where he doesn’t speak the language and he will HAVE TO leave the gig and come with you to the restaurant, or to the club,” says Browne. “This was an unexpected strategy breakthrough in a pursuit that for a legion of friends, disciples and admirers has become known as ’stalking the wild Lindley.’”

The breakthrough continues with the not-to-be-missed 2010 Jackson

UNIVERSAL RELEASING 4CD BOX OF UNRELEASED RECORDINGS BY THE LA’S

February 25, 2010 by admin
Filed under New Releases - CD's

A 4CD Box-set that gathers together all of the band’s remaining unreleased recordings, which are being officially released for the first time on one comprehensive set that captures the band’s myriad attempts to capture the feeling that Lee Maver attempted to harness in their sound.

Disc One collects the handful of superb singles the band released, including their fresh, spirited debut Way Out (1987), an unreleased version of the glorious Timeless Melody (1989), and of course There She Goes (1988/19990), the band’s one real hit and a much-covered classic that has sound-tracked the sweet moments to countless Hollywood movies, as well as other well loved favourites.

Disc Two features the best of the many out-takes the band produced as they worked through one highly respected producer after another such as John Porter (The Smiths, Billy Bragg), John Leckie (The Stone Roses, Radiohead) Mike Hedges (The Cure, Siouxsie And The Banshees), and Steve Lillywhite (Simple Minds and U2) as well as sessions by Bob Andrews, Dave Allen and Jeremy Allom.

Discs Three and Four give evidence of what a great live band The La’s were and possibly are: the force that comes through in the capturing of two never heard before live concerts, at London’s Town And Country Club in 1989 and at The Marquee in 1991, which help to explain why a band that only released one album over 20 years ago continues to fascinate.

This definitive set is presented in a beautifully packaged hardback box with a 60 page booklet. The striking artwork has been designed by the band’s original designer, Simon Ryan. Also included is a detailed essay by acclaimed journalist and author Will Hodgkinson as well as never seen before photos of the band by Paul Cox.

UNRELEASED LIVE CONCERTS DUE FROM JOHNNY WINTER, HOT TUNA, POCO AND JOHN DENVER

February 5, 2010 by admin
Filed under Featured, New Releases - CD's

Collectors’ Choice Music, the label that’s come to be known for compelling and often unexpected CD reissues, has announced the launch of Collectors’ Choice Music Live, a new label devoted to releasing great live performances, most of which have never previously been commercially available.

The series will launch April 20 with the release of four CDs: Johnny Winter And’s Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70; Poco’s Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood 9/30/71; Hot Tuna’s Live at the New Orleans House, Berkeley, CA September 1969; and John Denver’s Live at Cedar Rapids, 12/10/87.

According to Collectors’ Choice Music GM Gordon Anderson, “After some 15 years of reissuing albums and compiling artists, we’re convinced that some of the biggest remaining veins of gold in the vaults are the live shows that a lot of labels recorded of their artists in their prime, particularly those who made their reputation with improvisational prowess and/or ever-changing set lists. These first four releases on our new Collectors’ Choice Music Live label certainly fit that description.”

Johnny Winter And Live at the Fillmore East 10/3/70: To commemorate the release of his Johnny Winter And album, Texas blues guitarist/singer Johnny Winter played some shows at New York’s Fillmore East, some of which were compiled on 1971’s Live Johnny Winter And, a classic live album of the era to which this release makes a nice bookend. He had just formed a new band consisting of former member of the McCoys (“Hang on Sloopy”) including Rick Derringer on guitar, bassist Randy Jo Hobbs, and drummer Randy Zehringer. Although the McCoys were none too familiar with Winter’s work, they proved quick studies and entered the studio to make the album Johnny Winter And within three weeks. The New York Times reviewed the Fillmore show, citing “a considerable improvement over Winter’s previous band. Winter and [Derringer] played solos back at each other, simultaneously and in alternation.” The live album contains the Winter hit “Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo” and his take on Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61″ alongside blues classics “Rollin’ and Tumblin’,” “It’s My Own Fault” and “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.”

Poco Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood, 9/30/71: In the fall of ‘71, Poco was arguably the most popular of the first generation country-rock bands. By then, their album Deliverin’ had cracked the Top 30 and Poco thanked its label, Epic Records, with a private showcase at the CBS Records’ Hollywood studio. “We just set up as we would have for a small club,” recalls frontman Richie Furay, whose bandmates included guitarist/singer Paul Cotton (from the Illinois Speed Press), bassist Tim Schmidt (later of the Eagles), pedal steel player Rusty Young and drummer/vocalist George Grantham. By this time, Poco was evolving from country-rock towards an edgier rock sound. Says Furay, “Though we were innovators of the L.A. ‘country-rock’ sound, we weren’t going top be pigeonholed into being a one-sound band.” The 14 songs they performed for label employees that day were a solid cross-section of tunes that had appeared on its first four albums including the medley “Hard Luck Child/Child’s Claim to Fame/Pickin’ Up the Pieces,” plus “I Guess You Made It,” “A Man Like Me,” “Ol’ Forgiver,” “Heart That Music,” “Hurry Up,” “You Are the One” and more, an hour of music in all.

Hot Tuna: Live at the New Orleans House, Berkeley, CA September 1969: Hot Tuna was, of course, the blues band-within-a-band side project of Jefferson Airplane’s Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady that outlasted the parent band and continues to this day. Interestingly, the duo’s first commercial album, which made it to #30 on the Billboard pop album chart, was recorded live at Berkeley’s New Orleans House, but a lot more material was taped than was released. Much of it is issued for the first time on this 68-minute CD, which consists entirely of previously unreleased recordings. Explaining why they recorded their debut album was recorded live, Kaukoken says, “We tend to go places . . . and you lose a bit of that when you work in the studio. And it was cheaper too!” Of the 13 songs on this CD, six — “Death Don’t Have No Mercy,” “Winin’ Boy Blues,” “Uncle Sam Blues,” “I Know You Rider,” “Don’t You Leave Me Here” and “How Long Blues” — were included on the first Hot Tuna album, though the versions here are selected from different performances than the ones used on that LP. Other songs include Blind Boy Fuller’s “Keep On Truckin’,” Rev. Gary Davis’ “Keep Our Lamps Trimmed and Burning” and “Candy Man,” and Blind Blake’s “That’ll Never Happen No More.”

John Denver: Live at Cedar Rapids, December 10, 1987: What is the sound of an audience eating out of the palm of a performer’s hand? Utter silence. And that’s what was heard during the two-hour-plus Iowa concert that comprises this two-CD set. By 1987, Denver’s days as a Top 40 hitmaker were a decade in the past, but he remained a solid concert draw as a beloved, thoroughly American artist with a permanent place in the history of pop. It says much about Denver’s songwriting that, with the exception of half a dozen songs on which he’s accompanied by string quartet, he delivers two hours of solo music just his voice and 12-string guitar. The hits are here but so are new songs, some early-repertoire nuggets and a well-chosen cover or two. Included are “Farewell Andromeda (Welcome to My Morning,” “Take Me Home Country Roads,” “Rocky Mountain High,” “Annie’s Song,” “Love Is the Master,” “Mother Nature’s Son,” “Blow Up Your TV (Spanish Pipe Dream),” “Shanghai Breezes,” “Ohio” and more.

JOHN HIATT HITS ‘THE OPEN ROAD’ WITH NEW CD

February 1, 2010 by admin

The great John Hiatt, who last year was the recipient of a ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by the Americana Music Association, and was also an inductee to the Nashville Songwriters Association, is to release a brand new album, entitled The Open Road, on the New West Records label on Monday 8th March 2010.

The Open Road comprises eleven all-new tracks, recorded by Hiatt and, aptly enough, his seasoned Road band, featuring Kenny Blevins (drums), Patrick O’Hearn (Bass) and Doug Lancio (Guitars).

It’s Hiatt’s most energetic outing in years – 2008’s excellent Same Old Man set was a more reflective affair, but The Open Road powers along with the vigour of Hiatt’s Perfectly Good Guitar days. Looking at life through a rear view mirror was the inspiration for The Open Road, the rockin’ songs sizzle with the heat from a two lane blacktop on a summer’s day. It’s a set that gives the term ‘Garage Rock’ new meaning.

‘All the other years, my songs are about coming home’ Hiatt says, but within these eleven crackling new songs, including ‘Haulin’, and the title track, home is never the destination.

There’s even more good news for the UK Hiatt fans; John is to make his first appearances on these shores for several years in February 2010, with shows at The Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London on Monday 15th February, followed by one other show at the Waterfront in Belfast on Tuesday 16th February.

This electrifying, 100-minute release will be available as a CD with a Bonus DVD, as well as a standalone Blu-ray disc. With millions of albums sold and their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame solidified, the Pretenders are a special band with a special place in history. “Pretenders: Live in London” captures one of their many electrifying performances from their 2009 world tour.

Produced by FogoLabs, the concert was filmed at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire by Grammy and Emmy Award winning producers and directors Pierre & Francois Lamoureux. The video was shot without the use of cranes, dollies or steadicams to create movement. Instead it is about the band, giving it all and not holding back any as they do any night when they hit the stage. The filmmakers’ objective was to stay out the way and capture it within the frame. The band played brilliantly that night and what can be heard & seen on this release is an honest reproduction of that moment in time. There are no overdubs made to the music and no fake crowd noises added. The editing is made to savor moments and the music was mixed and mastered for it to breathe.

JAMES BROWN ‘THE SINGLES VOL 8: 1972-1973′

Filed under New Releases - CD's

Get ready for another exiting round of genius grooves from James Brown in The Singles Vol. 8: 1972-1973, a new 2-CD set in the acclaimed series that illuminates when JB became “The Godfather Of Soul.”

By this era, Black music was shifting – fast. “Sixties veterans Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield managed to evolve with the changing times, but relative newcomers Isaac Hayes, Al Green and Barry White loomed as the last of a dying breed,” writes compiler and former James Brown staffer Alan Leeds in the set’s liner notes. “The era of the stage shaking, Gospel-based Southern soul man was all but over… Established stars, like Ray Charles, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and Jackie Wilson, couldn’t buy a hit record. Somehow, James Brown was still standing.”

Standing he was, rocking the globe with “Get On The Good Foot,” “There It Is” and “I Got Ants In My Pants”; cautioning youth with the antidrug tale “King Heroin;” helping deliver hits for his super-funky band The J.B.’s with irresistible tracks “Pass The Peas” and “Doing It To Death,” now an all-time classic. He also experimented: a pop duet with Lyn Collins, “What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin’”; a remake of his hit “Think”; a rare cover of The Beatles’ “Something”; working with bandleader Fred Wesley on the score to Black Caesar, resulting in the hits “Down And Out In New York City” and “Sexy Sexy Sexy.”

Several rarities give the package extra collectability: an unreleased vocal version of “Hot Pants Road”; the single version of “Honky Tonk”; the U.K.-only release “I Know It’s True”; the rare mono promo mix of “Ants”; the rare single cover version of “Watermelon Man” by Wesley that features JB on drums; and a second re-cut of “Think.”

All tracks have been newly remastered from the analog singles masters, sounding better than ever – and several of the original single mixes are now on CD for the first time. The set is accompanied, as with previous releases, by a booklet thick with detailed track annotations, track-by-track anecdotes that serve as a James Brown career timeline, rare photos and reproductions of memorabilia from back in the day, and a sessionography complete with recording dates and band personnel.

THE CHIEFTANS AND RY COODER RELEASE ‘SAN PARICO’ COLLABORATION

January 30, 2010 by admin
Filed under New Releases - CD's

SAN PATRICIO is the much-anticipated new collaboration between Ry Cooder (whose glittering career includes such milestones as Buena Vista Social Club and Paris, Texas) and the legendary Irish band The Chieftains.

The record takes as its inspiration the story of a group of 19th Century Irish immigrants to the USA, who were conscripted into the US army, in their war against Mexico. The men of the San Patricio brigade defected to the enemy side and fought with their fellow Catholics against the American army, before meeting a tragic end when the war was lost. The music which this meeting of cultures created can be heard to this day in Mexico, and San Patricio brings new focus to this amazing story.

Guest stars on this record include Ry Cooder, Liam Neeson, Linda Ronstadt and Mexican musicians Carlos Nunez, Lila Downs and Los Cenzontles. The music is a perfect fusion of the sounds of Ireland with the sounds of Mexico and the Southern USA (which can be found to this day in certain Mexican cities). The energy and the joy of discovery can be heard on every track where the musicians collaborate.

This record will receive its European premiere at Celtic Connections (Glasgow) in January 2010, to be followed by a UK tour in Summer 2010. New album set for release on April 6th marks reunion with producer T Bone Burnett and features guest vocals from Neko Case & Kelly Hogan

Jakob Dylan will release his sophomore solo album, Women and Country, on Columbia Records on April 6th, 2010. Soulful yet striking and ripe with sublime beauty, Women and Country is the follow up to the artist’s 2008 critically acclaimed debut, Seeing Things. This new collection finds him reuniting with acclaimed Grammy and Golden Globe winning producer T Bone Burnett (Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Crazy Heart), who produced the Wallflowers’ 1996 breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse. On the release, Jakob is also joined by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, who provide back-up vocals to 8 of the album’s 11 tracks.

“I’m so happy to be collaborating with Jakob at this exciting and vital time in his life as an artist,” said T Bone Burnett. “I think this new album is an important work from a great musician.”

Recorded in Los Angeles, CA, Women and Country is the full realization of a journey Jakob Dylan began on his previous solo release Seeing Things, which hearkens back to the timeless artistry of American roots music and country blues masters. Seeing Things garnered significant critical praise for Dylan including The Los Angeles Times who called him “a gifted storyteller” and USA Today who said the release was “an evocative acoustic album that reveals the poetic grace of his lyrics and the maturity and moving power of his voice.” On Women and Country Jakob reaches new majestic heights with his voice and song-writing that are as distinct as. This, coupled with T Bone Burnett’s haunting production and the stirringly rich vocals by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, creates a powerful and melancholic experience for the listener.

Backing Jakob Dylan up on the album’s 11 songs are T Bone Burnett’s s acclaimed group of musicians including Dennis Crouch (bass), Jay Bellerose (drums), David Mansfield (fiddle & mandolin), Marc Ribot (guitar), Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Greg Leisz (pedal steel), Darrell Leonard (trumpet), Ira Nepus (trombone) and George Bohanon (horns). Standout tracks include the opener “Nothin’ But the Whole Wide World,” which sets the tone of the album, the pensive ballad “Down on Our Own Shield,” “Everybody’s Hurting,” which showcases Jakob and Neko’s moving harmonies and “Truth for a Truth” that features great guitar work from Marc Ribot.

Track Listing for Jakob Dylan’s new album ‘Women and Country’ is as follows:

Nothing But The Whole Wide World
Down On Our Shield
Lend A Hand
We Don’t Live Here Anymore
Everybody’s Hurting
Yonder Come the Blues
Holy Rollers for Love
Truth For A Truth
They’ve Trapped US Boys
Smile When You Call Me That
Standing Eight Count
