BOB DYLAN THE ORIGINAL MONO RECORDINGS (8 CD SET W/LIMITED EDITION POSTER) AND THE BOOTLEG SERIES VOL. 9 – THE WITMARK DEMOS: 1962-1964

August 24, 2010 by Your Way To Music

The Original Mono Recordings are comprised of these albums painstakingly reproduced from their first generation monaural mixes as the artist intended them to be heard: One channel of powerful sound, both direct and immediate. While stereo recordings had been available as early as the mid-1950s, mono was still the predominant – and often preferred – mode of recording and mixing by the top artists of the 1960s. As a result, artists like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan devoted their attention to the mono mixes, leaving the stereo mixing process to studio engineers.
The Original Mono Recordings are accompanied by a deluxe booklet, featuring vintage photographs of Bob Dylan and an expansive essay from renowned author and critic – and longtime Dylan aficionado – Greil Marcus. Each disc in the set comes in its own individual jacket which faithfully replicates the original album artwork, complete with labels and stickers that were found on the original 1960s releases.

Also includes a limited edition 18″ x 24″ Bob Dylan poster.

The eight albums in The Original Mono Recordings are as follows:

Bob Dylan – 1962
The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan – 1963
The Times They Are A-Changin’ – 1964
Another Side Of Bob Dylan – 1964
Bringing It All Back Home – 1965
Highway 61 Revisited – 1965
Blonde on Blonde – 1966
John Wesley Harding – 1967

The Witmark Demos are seeing their first commercial release on 2 CD and 4 LP 180-gram vinyl in nearly five decades after they were first recorded. Listening to these 47 original recordings, one can trace Dylan’s dramatic growth as a songwriter from early traditionally-styled songs like “Man On The Street” and “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Willie” through the social commentary of “Blowin’ In The Wind, “The Times They Are A Changin’” and “Masters Of War,” and the groundbreaking lyrical genius of “Mr. Tambourine Man.” All of these songs, and all the others on The Witmark Demos, were written – and their subsequent demos recorded – before Bob Dylan turned 24 years old.

Among the many gems found on The Witmark Demos are 15 previously unreleased Bob Dylan songs which include the plaintive “Ballad For A Friend,” the civil rights era-inspired “Long Ago, Far Away” and “The Death Of Emmett Till,” and the poignant “Guess I’m Doing Fine.”

The Witmark Demos also features a deluxe booklet featuring in-depth liner notes by noted music historian Colin Escott, as well as rare photographs of Bob Dylan captured during the same period as these early recordings.

ICONIC SOUTHERN SONGWRITER TONY JOE WHITE GETS RAW ON “THE SHINE”, HIS MOST INTIMATE, UNVARNISHED ALBUM TO DATE

August 24, 2010 by Your Way To Music
Filed under Featured, New Releases - CD's

One of the most distinctive and respected songwriters of the Deep South, Tony Joe White, gets raw and real on his new record “THE SHINE”, set for a September 28 release on his own Swamp Records. “THE SHINE” is a stripped-down collection of ten new White-penned songs that beautifully lays bare his rich, nuanced baritone, and distinctive brand of swampy southern soul.

While White’s critically acclaimed “Uncovered” featured a slew of special guests including Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Michael McDonald and J.J. Cale, “THE SHINE” is all about White. He produced and recorded the album himself in his home studio outside Nashville. From the first whispery notes of “Season Man”, in which he recounts an ominous dream, to the record’s closing track, “A Place to Watch the Sun Go Down”, “THE SHINE” is an album of understated beauty and beguiling mystery.

Tony Joe White will tour extensively this fall. Tour dates will be announced soon.

“THE SHINE” tracklist:

Season Man
Ain’t Doing Nobody No Good
Paintings on the Mountain
Tell Me Why
All
Long Way From the RiverTon
Strange Night
Something to Soften the Blow
Roll Train Roll
A Place to Watch the Sun Go Down

RONNIE WOOD RELEASING NEW ALBUM IN SEPTEMBER

Eagle Records are delighted to announce the release of Ronnie Wood’s brand new studio album “I Feel Like Playing”. The album is released on 27 September 2010 [Cat. No. EAGCD428]. Featuring twelve brand new cuts, written specially for this release, “I Feel Like Playing” takes its name [and cover] from one of Ronnie’s most vibrant recent artworks. The colour and verve of the artwork is equally reflected in the swagger and roll of the music on the album. The album boasts an amazing set of guest artists who have colluded with Ronnie to create something truly special.

Ronnie Wood - I Feel Like Playing

Ronnie Wood needs no introduction to any fan of British rock music. Starting his career with The Birds and then Creation, it was when Ronnie joined the Jeff Beck Group that he truly started to stamp his identity on the music world. After that group split, Ronnie – along with Rod Stewart – joined up with ex-Small Faces Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones in The Faces. Whilst Ronnie [and Rod] moved on after a couple of years, The Faces are viewed by all rock fans as a truly classic band; and in fact they perform a handful of dates in 2010 with Mick Hucknall on vocals. After the release of his first solo album, Ronnie was invited to join the Rolling Stones – in 1975 – and remains with them to this day.

Solo work has always co-existed alongside Ronnie’s band commitments and “I Feel Like Playing” is, he feels, his best album yet. Many of the friends made along the course of an incredible career appear on the album; guests include luminaries such as Slash, Flea, Billy Gibbons, Kris Kristofferson, Bobby Womack, Ian McLagan and more.

TRACKLISTING

1) Why You Wanna Go And Do A Thing Like That 2) Sweetness 3) Lucky Man 4) I Gotta See 5) Thing About You 6) Catch You 7) Spoonful 8) I Don’t Think So 9) 100% 10) Fancy Pants 11) Tell Me Something 12) Forever

Rightly revered for his time with The Faces, Jeff Beck Group and of course The Stones, Ronnie Wood has continued to chart his own course and his output of both high quality music and art has been a constant. “I Feel Like Playing” is a great addition to his catalogue and all lovers of true British creative mavericks will find much to admire.

BOBBY WHITLOCK PUBLISHES HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY THIS WINTER

June 4, 2010 by Your Way To Music

Bobby Whitlock will be publishing his autobiography this winter.

Here is a short synopsis of the book:

. Bobby Whitlock comes from Mississippi and as a child suffered harshly at the hands of his abusive father. He recalls the racism in the southern states at the time in candid detail. As a young boy he was sent out to pick cotton to earn money for his family that treated him so badly. He was a country boy with a great voice and a talent for music. He saw this as a way of escaping the awful abuse at the hands of his preacher father. He loved soul music and he was the first white person to be signed to Stax records HIP label. He was the first ‘Friend’ to join the classic Delaney & Bonnie and Friends saga, and recalls this chapter with humour, pathos and occasionally anger.

. Delaney Bramlett died during the course of writing this book and this is the first time that the whole Delaney and Bonnie and Friends story has been told from the inside.

. He talks about how he joined them, living together in a small house, getting a band, moving to a commune of musicians and the funny events that happened there. Recording with Leon Russell and Marc Benno, signing with Elektra records. Bobby recalls the first few album sessions that were sabotaged in one way or another by Delaney. The ups and down of touring with them, their violent fights, the drug taking, sex with Janis Joplin, trouble with Hells Angels, escaping the Vietnam draft.

. Both Eric Clapton and George Harrison were fans and joined their band in 1969. Foolishly, Eric asked the whole band to stay at his country home when they came to England for a tour. They basically trashed it thinking they were superstars. Delaney and Bonnie had every opportunity presented to them to be a huge success. Delaney’s attitude ruined it all, largely due to his abusive nature and a heavy intake of cocaine.

. Eric used the band for his first solo album and flew to Los Angeles to record it. He loved Delaney’s voice and wanted to be able to sing like him. Bobby remembers how those sessions went. A short US tour followed with Eric, but the experience was not a good one. Most of the ‘Friends’ left to join Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.

After the Friends split, Bobby Whitlock came to England for a break and gather his thoughts. He stayed with Eric at his home and after a few weeks they decided to get a band together. That band was called Derek and the Dominos. They co-wrote the majority of the songs on their debut double album ‘Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs’. It went on to be a hugely successful album. The title song remains a radio favourite and the album is always in the top 100 essential albums charts.

. The thing that impresses us about Bobby is his amazing powers of recollection and great story telling. Yet again, the full story of Derek the Dominos has never been told from a band member. Eric Clapton’s memory of events in the late sixties and early seventies is very sketchy. Many people who bought his biography were very disappointed about the lack of new information on this period. Bobby Whitlock puts that right in this book. The full story behind the ‘Layla’ album is told including how and why the front painting was used as the cover of the album. How the drug fueled sessions produced one of the greatest albums of all time. Their live shows were legendary. Ultimately drugs would destroy the group.

. Elton John was the support act for the Dominos on their US tour in 1970. He proved to be a little too wild and was thrown off the tour after smashing up one hotel room too many.

. Fans have always agreed that George Harrison’s triple album, ‘All Things Must Pass’, is the best solo album by any of the Beatles. Not much is known about the 2 month sessions. Bobby was there with Eric and played on every track. He shares his memories from the recordings as well as revealing who plays on individual tracks. This is something fans have been wanting to know ever since the album was released.

. He was very close to George Harrison, and was engaged to Paula Boyd, George’s sister in law.

. Bobby remembers the tragic events about his band mates in the Dominos, the death of Carl Radle and the declining mental health of drummer Jim Gordon, who killed his mother with a hammer. He recalls in graphic detail the first time Eric took heroin and the effects it had on him.

. After the Dominos split, Bobby stayed in England and took part in various sessions such as ‘Exile On Main Street’ with the Rolling Stones and he has some interesting observations on the recording of that album.

. Bobby has many anecdotes on his associations with The Allman Brothers, Leon Russell, Keith Moon, Stephen Stills and several others.

. Eric Clapton writes a heartfelt foreword.

This will certainly be a must have book for any serious music fan this Christmas.
