BILL COSBY SOUNDS THE ALARM FOR ‘STATE OF EMERGENCY’ CD

Socially Conscious Hip-Hop Project Launches Oct. 19 Via Virtual Town Hall In New York City

Listen to the tracks for free from Bill Cosby’s Cosnarati, State of Emergency available at billcosby.com

LOS ANGELES – Bill Cosby rekindles hip-hop’s socially conscious flame on “Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency,” an album of music with messages reflecting today’s most critical issues affecting young people. Created to engage listeners and lead them to take action, the CD’s empowering and dialogue-provoking themes will be spread throughout the Internet via the comedian/actor/author’s extensive social media network and an interactive new web site, billcosby.com, designed to build a grassroots campaign of activist-led house parties and town halls.
On Oct. 19, Cosby and the Cosnarati Band will kick off the project with a virtual town hall meeting in New York City. Presented in association with Ustream, the town hall starts at 7pm EDT (4pm PDT) on urban radio station web sites across the country as well as billcosby.com and facebook.com/billcosby. A highlight of the 90-minute event will include a first time ever performance by Cosnarati specifically for the town hall event of a few songs from the record. The songs will be available at digital retailers on Oct. 20, to be followed by the album’s Nov. 24 physical and digital release.

Audience members can tweet @BillCosby before and during the live town hall using http://www.tinyurl.com/ASKCOSBY and connect with him directly at http://twitter.com/BillCosby

During the town hall, Cosby will simultaneously relaunch billcosby.com – supported by Blue State Digital, a leading online marketing agency – and announce the house party campaign. Visitors to the site will be able to obtain the “Emergency” CD, its lyrics and a copy of Cosby’s 2007 best-seller, “Come On People: On the Path From Victims to Victors.” It’s all part of a grassroots effort to foster ongoing community dialogue and action by way of listening parties held at homes, community centers, churches and other locales.

Cosby executive produced the project and conceived the songs’ story concepts. “I don’t like referring to the music as ‘clean,” says Cosby, who does not rap or sing on the album. “What I like is what you’re not going to do. You’re not going to curse. You’re not going to put women down. You’re not going to put the glory of the gun somewhere. And you’re not going to put a whole lot of violence up front like that’s the thing that will cleanse you and make you feel better.”

Two years in the making, “State of Emergency” adds new meaning to the phrase “message in the music.” Tackling such social issues as self-respect, peer pressure, abuse and education, the CD is the aural companion to Cosby’s “Come on People,” co-authored with Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint. The project’s 14 tracks integrate frank, positive messages with a progressive mix of hip-hop, R&B, jazz, pop, funk and rock. The result is a strong, cohesive narrative that doesn’t rely on profanity, misogyny, materialism or ego exercising to deliver its powerful impact.

“State of Emergency” was produced by Cosby’s longtime musical colleague, William “Spaceman” Patterson. The musician/arranger’s extensive list of credits include “The Cosby Show,” Miles Davis, LL Cool J, Eric Clapton and Alicia Keys. In addition to his production partner Ced-Gee, co-founder of the pioneering hip-hop group Ultramagnetic MCs, Patterson recruited three guest rappers for “State of Emergency”: Jace the Great, Brother Hahz and Supa Nova Slom.

Brother Hahz and Jace the Great set the stage on the opening title track, which features a no-holds-barred chorus: “Let the horns blow; it’s a state of emergency/This whole world needs surgery/Every soul breeds perjury/And I got the urge to speak my mind.” Other standout tracks include the New Orleans-jazzed “Where’s the Parade?,” which salutes powerful black women; the introspective “Where Did I Go Wrong?”; the funky yet hard-hitting “Dad’s Behind the Glass”: and the R&B-empowered “Get on Your Job.”

Notes Patterson, “We want people to receive ‘State of Emergency’ the way we made it: as a gift; an opportunity for dialogue between children and parents and an alternative to the cookie-cutter sound that’s out here. Hopefully, we can tear down some walls and be part of the solution, not the problem.”

By using the universal language of music, “Bill Cosby Presents the Cosnarati: State of Emergency” delivers a powerful wakeup call – one that everyone should heed. “Do me a favor,” adds Cosby. “Just listen. Please.”

CHRIS O’DELL WASN’T FAMOUS. SHE WASN’T EVEN ALMOST FAMOUS. BUT SHE WAS THERE.

She was in the studio when the Beatles recorded The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be, and when Paul recorded “Hey Jude,” she sang in the chorus.

She was at Ringo’s kitchen table when George Harrison said, “You know, Ringo, I’m in love with your wife.” And Ringo replied, “Better you than someone we don’t know.”

She typed the lyrics to George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. She lived with George and Pattie Boyd at Friar Park, developed a crush on Eric Clapton, and unwittingly got involved in the famous love story between Eric and Pattie.

She’s the subject of Leon Russell’s “Pisces Apple Lady,” a song he wrote to woo her. Other rock legends with whom she was intimate include Ringo, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan.

She worked with the Rolling Stones as their personal assistant on their infamous 1972 tour and did a drug run for Keith Richards.

She’s “the woman down the hall” in Joni Mitchell’s song “Coyote” about a love triangle on Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour. She’s the “mystery woman” pictured on the back of the Rolling Stones album Exile on Main Street. She’s the “Miss O’Dell” of George Harrison’s song about her.

Miss O’Dell is the remarkable story of an ordinary woman who lived the dream of millions — to be part of rock royalty’s trusted inner circle. Illustrated with private photographs and jam-packed with intimate anecdotes, Miss O’Dell is a backstage pass to some of the most momentous events in rock history.

“A riveting, honest, and brave account of life with the most famous names in rock and roll history…hard work, tough love, huge loss, pain and gain. I couldn’t put the book down. I just loved it.”
– Pattie Boyd, author of Wonderful Tonight

“Chris O’Dell knew all the greatest names in sixties and seventies pop, from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. Nicknamed ‘the Pisces Apple Lady,’ she was the ultimate insider, a uniquely trusted employee and friend in a world where betrayal and backstabbing are the norm. Now at last she tells her story, in devastating detail yet without envy or malice…a rockin’ good read.”
– Philip Norman, author of Shout! The Beatles in Their Generation and John Lennon: The Life

“I enjoyed reading it very much. It is an astonishing look into the backstage of rock and roll.”
– Leon Russell

BOBBY WHITLOCK ‘MY TIME’ CD DUE

September 17, 2009 by admin
Filed under New Releases - CD's

Bobby Whitlock will be releasing another new cd in the coming weeks. He revisits a few Dominos classics as well as a host of new material. Bobby exclusively reveals the details to our readers:

~My Time~
I built a recording studio in the hill country down in Mississippi just to record this record. I sure am glad that I did too.

“Sold Me Down the River”

Brady Blade counts off this straight ahead rock and roll opener. Darryl Johnson is on bass and Buddy Miller is playing rhythm guitar. I’m playing the slide guitar and the piano and organ. My son Beau and daughter Ashley are singing background vocals on this whole record. Ashley has a lovely innocent sounding voice and Beau sounds exactly like me when I was his age and was with the Dominos. Our timbres are the same. I knew this would be the only opportunity I would ever have to sing with both of my children. Now it’s there forever.

“Bell Bottom Blues”

I couldn’t resist doing this song. I am playing a 1956 Hammond B3 thru four Leslie speakers all set differently. It is very lush sounding. Beau is singing my old part on this.

“It’s Only Midnight”

Steve Cropper and I wrote this song. After I finished recording it at I sent it to him in Nashville and he put his signature guitar on it. Jim Horn came down to Mississippi and played sax and all of the horn section parts on everything.

“A Wing And A Prayer”

The piano that I’m playing is a new Yamaha C3. Along with the Hammond B3 and a couple of Leslies and my children’s choir it sounds like the little church in the woods.

“Home”

I did an acoustic radio tour across America in the mid seventies. During a live interview that I was doing in Red River, New Mexico a woman called the station on the request line and was on the air with us. She said that she had a request for me. I asked her what it was, thinking that it was going to be, what Thorn Tree was about or something like that. But that wasn’t it at all. She said that she needed help finding her son who had gone missing for some time. She said that no-one would help her because it was a domestic dispute. This conversation is live on the airwaves. I said that I didn’t know what I could do but to write a song about it and sing it. She said that she tried to get some people in Nashville to help her by doing just that but no-one would. I told her that I would do whatever I could do. After that during each and every interview that I did, and that was a lot of them, I would say to the DJ, “excuse me a second I have to say something.” Then I would say, ”Michael go home son, your Mother’s crying and she needs you and she misses you.” Then I would continue on with the interview like nothing had happened. It’s against FAA regulations to do such a thing. But it was live and no-one knew that I was going to do it. I didn’t ask their permission. I just did it. Michael did hear me and eventually went home to his Mother. After I got back home and off tour I wrote this song.

“Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad”

Big horn section and a funky track on another one of my favorite songs. I’m playing rhythm guitar and Hammond B3 and Barry Swain is playing lead guitar. With Brady Blade on drums and Darryl Johnson playing bass this song rocks!

“I Get High On You”

CoCo is singing on this one with me. I’m playing acoustic guitar and Barry is playing the lead guitar.

“It’s Only Thunder”

This is the only track on this CD that was not recorded at my studio.
Jim Keltner is playing drums. Tim Drummond is on bass. Steve Cropper in playing electric guitar. I’m playing acoustic guitar and Hammond B3.

“Ghost Driver”

Ghost Driver is about me learning how to drive and wrecking my Daytona Ferrari with the speedometer stuck on 155 mph. The story is in my book “Domino”. This is a driving song just like “Let It Rain”. I used to tear down the motorway at night playing that song at full volume and I would wind the engine up to whatever key the song was changing to and then I would shift out into the next gear. Rock and rolling down the road. Awesome! Some things never change. Ferraris are finely tuned and you can actually play them if going fast and getting there very quickly doesn’t bother you. And you’ve got to have the right song on your player. Darryl Johnson plays some very funky bass on this number. Barry Swain plays lead guitar on this. It was take one on every song he played on. What a fine player.

“There She Goes”

This song came to me as I watched my daughter drive away into the night back to an impossible situation that I could not help her with. So I had to let her go.

“I Love You”

This song was written by Beau and myself. He wrote the chorus while sitting in the swing under an apple tree in our back garden when we lived in Ireland. He had just turned eight. There is a photograph of him at work in the swing. He had my white Strat in his lap and was playing an open E. He finished it and came in and said, “hey Dad listen to this that I just wrote”. And he started singing, “I love you, I love the way you always make me feel. I love you, I love you.” I finished it and recorded it in Mississippi.
I’m playing the acoustic, main electric rhythm and lead guitar and Buddy Miller is doing the fills. I love the ending. The acoustic guitar has a lovely little melody and Ashley is singing at the end, “I love you, I love you”. I can’t express my feelings with words as to what this means to me. Except that I will always be able to hear her sing and say, “I love you” to me.

“Born to Sing the Blues”

My daughter was about four and had just learned to write. One evening I was down stairs sitting on the couch playing my guitar. As usual, I was in the doghouse with her mother again. I was playing a very cool little something when up walks Ashley with pencil in hand and a piece of paper that she had been writing on. She handed it to me and said, “Here Daddy, this is you”. It read, Born To Sing The Blues. I couldn’t believe it! I wrote the song right then and there. I have written two really great songs that were both started by each of my children when they were just that. Children. What an inspiration they were.

“Standing In The Rain”

This is one of my favorite songs. I really was standing in the rain when the inspiration for this came to me. Buddy Miller plays the tenor guitar and the mandolin on this. I’m playing the acoustic guitar. The rain storm was taking place while we were recording. So I had some mikes set up on the porch recording it while it was all happening. Thunder, lightening, rain and all.

BRUCE HORNSBY RELEASES NEW ALBUM WITH SPECIAL GUEST ERIC CLAPTON

August 29, 2009 by admin
Filed under New Releases - CD's

“When I play music, I guess I’m what you’d call an ecstatic,” says Bruce Hornsby. “I’m always pursuing those joyful, exuberant, transcendent moments that happen when everything is working. That’s why I called this album Levitate, because that’s what those moments feel like.”
By any standard, Bruce Hornsby has built one of the most diverse and adventurous careers in contemporary music. Drawing from a vast wellspring of American musical traditions, the singer/pianist/composer/bandleader has created a large and remarkably accomplished body of work that’s employed a vast array of stylistic approaches, while maintaining the integrity, virtuosity and artistic curiosity that have been hallmarks of his work from the start.

The 13-time Grammy nominee’s multifarious talents and far-ranging musical interests are prominent on Levitate, which marks the artist’s Verve debut. The album’s 13 songs span an expansive sonic and emotional palette, encompassing heartfelt insights and absurdist humor, while incorporating a broad assortment of influences within compact song structures. The material ranges from the expansive, expressive songcraft of “Prairie Dog Town” and “In the Low Country” to the gently reflective introspection of “Invisible” and “Here We Are Again,” with the album-opening “The Black Rats of London” offering a swaggering treatise on the influence of the rodents, insects and microbes upon key historical events. Such colorful moments help make Levitate a consistently compelling evocation of Hornsby’s established abilities, as well as a substantial creative departure.

“I’ve always been about finding a place to express my interest in playing the piano within the pop song context,” Hornsby explains. “But with this record, I felt like I’d done that enough, so this time I really wanted the focus to be on the songs. This record actually has a couple of songs that are under three minutes, which is kind of unprecedented for me.

“It’s also my first record with no piano solos,” he adds. “I tend to write long, lyric-intensive songs, and I also like to blow. But this time I thought, I’ve done that, and I really want to make this record more about the writing.”

Beyond its distinctive musical approach, Levitate features the vibrant balance of sincerity and silliness that’s long been a hallmark of Hornsby’s songwriting. “As I get older, I tend to gravitate in my writing more and more toward the humorous,” he says. “For years, I was sort of well known for writing love songs, but I stopped doing that a long time ago, because it’s just not what I’m interested in now. But for Levitate, I actually wrote a love song, ‘Here We Are Again’–although it’s a time-travel fantasy love song using the language of physics, it resonated for me as an interesting angle lyrically.”

Levitate also demonstrates Hornsby’s knack for provocative songwriting collaborations. For instance, “Cyclone” features resonant wordplay courtesy of legendary Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. The album’s title track, meanwhile, finds Hornsby writing a haunting lyric around a theme originally written by soundtrack composer Thomas Newman for The Shawshank Redemption. And “Paperboy” and “Michael Raphael,” both co-written by Hornsby and lifelong friend Chip deMatteo, draw upon Hornsby’s longstanding fascination with the language of modern classical music.

The album is the first Hornsby release co-credited to his longstanding touring band the Noisemakers, an appropriately eclectic outfit that includes bassist J.V. Collier, guitarist Doug Derryberry, drummer Sonny Emory, reeds player Bobby Read and keyboardist John “J.T.” Thomas.

“This particular lineup has been together since ‘02, but J.T. has been with me for nineteen years, Bobby for sixteen, and JV has been here for fifteen, so I’ve got a lot of history with these guys,” Hornsby states. “The players come from disparate backgrounds and all bring something different to the table, but we’re all on the same page in our pursuit of a joyful noise. Playing with these guys consistently pushes me to improve, vocally and pianistically.”

Levitate (which Hornsby co-produced with studio vet Tony Berg) also features guest appearances by Eric Clapton on “Space Is the Place” and fiddler Andy Leftwitch, a longtime mainstay of Ricky Skaggs’ band, on “The Black Rats of London.”

The album is dedicated to the memory of Hornsby’s talented nephew R.S. Hornsby, who frequently performed with Bruce as guest guitarist, and who was killed in a car accident six days after recording a memorable solo on “Continents Drift.”

“That’s been, of course, so difficult for our family,” notes Hornsby. “But I love the fact that this beautiful, long solo that R.S. played can serve as his last testament. He was a beautiful player; he really had the gift. He played with a lot of soul, a lot of feeling.”

Although Levitate marks a departure for Hornsby in many respects, it displays the same creative iconoclasm that’s been a constant in the artist’s two-and-a-half decade recording career. His commercial stock soared early on, when “The Way It Is”–the title track of Bruce Hornsby and the Range’s 1986 debut album–became the most-played song on American radio in 1987, winning ASCAP’s Song of the Year award. “The Way It Is” and such subsequent hits as “Mandolin Rain” and “Every Little Kiss,” established Hornsby as popular pop act, while high-profile work with the likes of Don Henley, and Huey Lewis made him an in-demand collaborator.

Despite his early successes, Hornsby chose to pursue a more personal, idiosyncratic musical path, focusing on projects that sparked his creative interest and musical progress. That direction was manifested in his lengthy association with the Grateful Dead, with whom he’s performed more than 100 concerts as guest keyboardist. His work with the Dead encouraged Hornsby to incorporate his interest in musical improvisation into his own performances, while his eclectic musical interests have been reflected in a wide array of recording projects. Over the years, Hornsby has successfully ventured into jazz, classical, bluegrass and even electronica, as reflected by such acclaimed recent releases as the bluegrass project Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby and the jazz trio album Camp Meeting, with Jack deJohnette and Christian McBride. The prestigious list of Hornsby collaborators now includes such diverse figures as Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Bela Fleck, Charlie Haden, Bonnie Raitt, Elton John, Branford Marsalis, Pat Metheny, Robbie Robertson, Leon Russell, Chaka Khan, Wayne Shorter, Squeeze, Tupac Shakur and Sting.

“I guess I’m a bit of a musical proselytizer,” says Hornsby. “I’m always hoping to turn the audience on to more adventurous music and music that’s below the mainstream radar. I know that that may seem too pretentious to the rock and pop world. But for me it’s all just beautiful music, and people seem willing to come along with me on the journey.”

Indeed, Hornsby’s musical adventures have won him an extraordinarily devoted and open-minded fan base, which has enthusiastically supported his varied musical output. “For a good two or three years in the mid-’90s, I hardly played any of my hits on stage, and people thought I was committing career suicide,” he recalls. “But for me, it was about getting people to understand that if you’re here for a stroll down memory lane, then I’m not your guy. And gradually, I was able to sort of flip my crowd, and acquire an audience that’s there to hear us be adventurous.”

Indeed, Bruce Hornsby’s restless musical spirit continues to spontaneously push him forward into exciting new musical pursuits. He’s currently working with Chicago director Kathleen Marshall on a prospective Broadway musical titled SCKBSTD (many of the new lp’s songs are from this project). He’s composed and recorded several soundtrack projects for filmmaker Spike Lee, most recently writing and recording the score for Kobe Doin’ Work, Lee’s ESPN documentary on Kobe Bryant. Hornsby is also featured onscreen in the new Robin Williams/Bobcat Goldthwait film World’s Greatest Dad. That film features lots of Hornsby music, including the Levitate track “Invisible.”

Hornsby’s deep grounding in American roots music recently led him to return to his alma mater, the University of Miami, to launch the Creative American Music Program. The new program develops the creative skills of young songwriters by immersing them in the multiple musical traditions–including folk, old-time traditional music, blues, gospel and bluegrass–that are the foundation of modern American songwriting.

Such projects are consistent with the same lifelong pursuit of musical transcendence that helps to animate Levitate. “To me,” says Hornsby, “it’s always just been about broadening my reach and moving into new areas. So it’s a fantastic situation to be able to do that, and to continue to pursue a wide-ranging musical life.”

Following a critically acclaimed box-set, a duet recording with Ricky Scaggs and a jazz trio album w/ Christian McBride & Jack DeJohnette, the beloved songwriter/pianist/vocalist returns to the format that has brought his greatest commercial success. Accompanied by his seasoned touring band the Noisemakers, Hornsby’s stellar new songs are presented in dynamic arrangements with his signature blend of rock, country, pop & jazz and featuring some of the finest vocal performances of Bruce’s illustrious career The title track is the end theme for Spike Lee’s documentary Kobe at Work about the NBA superstar Kobe Bryant.

Bruce also wrote the score (his first) Hornsby has a featured role (as himself) in the film World’s Greatest Dad opening August 21st starring Robin Williams directed by Bobcat Goldthwait and featuring several Hornsby songs including the Levitate track “Invisible” A number of the songs on Levitate are part of the score for a prospective Broadway musical SCKBSTD currently in development.

The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE DVD collection boasts 125 remarkable performances by the most influential and significant figures in rock music history, as well as the speeches, toasts and roasts by which these members of rock royalty salute each others’ accomplishments. History is made when legendary artists such as Mick Jagger and Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen and Bono, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Tom Petty, take the stage for once-in-a-lifetime collaborations. The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE set includes nine DVDs, eight of these featuring an assortment of performances spanning more than two decades of ceremonies, as well as induction and acceptance speeches, and never-before-seen backstage and rehearsal footage. A ninth DVD features The Concert For The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, a star-studded concert event which opened the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland in 1995.

Never before available, the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE DVD set is an unparalleled rock ‘n’ roll experience – over 24 hours of rare and exclusive performances and footage – and a must-own for every music fan.

On October 20, the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE 9-DVD set will be available for purchase exclusively online for $119.96 via the DVD website www.RockHallDVDs.com or www.TimeLife.com.

Each year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honors rock music’s pioneering figures during prestigious, black-tie ceremonies. Rock’s biggest stars induct their biggest influences and contemporaries, with heartfelt, wise and witty speeches. Over the years, Paul McCartney has inducted John Lennon, Paul Simon has inducted Stevie Wonder, Steven Tyler has
inducted AC/DC, Elton John has inducted The Beach Boys, and in turn, Elton John was inducted by Axl Rose. ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE includes a staggering 52 of these tributes, all complete and unedited. But, it’s during the live performance part of the ceremony when rock history is really made.

With egos set aside, the artists take the stage and deliver once-in-a-lifetime performances, often with a truly mind-blowing combination of talent, such as Mick Jagger performing with Bruce Springsteen, REM with Eddie Vedder, The Band with Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck with Jimmy Page. As Robbie Robertson once commented, “It’s an opportunity to see musical combinations we may never see again as long as we live,” Case in point, 1988’s ceremony featured a jaw-dropping performance of The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” with George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Mick Jagger and Billy Joel. The ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME LIVE DVD set includes 125 of these musically historic performances, from Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry rockin’ “Roll Over Beethoven” at the inaugural ceremony in 1986, to Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ron Wood, Joe Perry, Flea, and Metallica’s rendition of “The Train Kept A-Rollin’” at this year’s ceremony in April. As a bonus, a ninth DVD contains the 1996 Concert For The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame featuring an all-star line-up including John Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, Lou Reed, Soul Asylum, The Allman Brothers, Sheryl Crow, The Kinks, Ann and Nancy Wilson, John Fogerty, James Brown and Al Green.

The Rock and Roll of Fame Foundation and Museum’s anniversary celebration will extend beyond the DVD set, with both a book and two groundbreaking concerts this fall. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: The First 25 Years, chronicling 25 years of induction ceremonies, will be published by Collins Design (an imprint of HarperCollins) in September. In October, the Hall of Fame will present two live concert events at Madison Square Garden in New York, featuring performances by Eric Clapton, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Aretha Franklin, Metallica, Paul Simon, Simon & Garfunkel, Stevie Wonder, and U2.

About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and Museum: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established 25 years ago by legendary record executive Ahmet Ertegun and a group of music business executives to honor the artists that have defined rock and roll and have inspired and continue to inspire a generation. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is the nonprofit organization that exists to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music. It carries out this mission both through its operation of a world-class museum designed by I.M. Pei in Cleveland, Ohio that collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets this art form and through its library and archives as well as educational programs.

BOBBY WHITLOCK RELEASES NEW “VINTAGE” CD

Bobby Whitlock is a busy man these days. As well as writing his biography, he also released a fine cd with his wife CoCo, titled “Lovers”. It was released last year to critical acclaim.

Bobby Whitlock is about to release a new cd titled “Vintage”. Bobby exclusively runs through all the tracks for Your Way To Music.

“Who’s been Sleeping in My Bed” was recorded at my studio in Mississippi, Dead Horse Studio. It is the definitive version of this song. I play all of the guitar work and the keyboards as well. Jim Horn is playing the flute. You can hear my voice bleeding thru my grandmother’s dobro. That is what I used to record with initially. I added the slide and the other electric guitar.

”Save Your Love For Me” was recorded in 1982 with Chris Thompson at his home in London. I am playing the keyboards. He is playing the guitar and singing background with me.

”Southern Gentleman” was recorded in the early eighties in Nashville and has Dee Murray playing bass with Philip Donnelly on guitar. It has the Memphis Horns on it as well. Inadvertently left off of the players list was Tony Newman on drums.

The “Streets of L.A.” was recorded at Jack Tempchin’s house in Hollywood. I am playing everything on this one.

”Island of Love” was recorded at Roger Greenaway’s home just outside of London in 1982. I am playing everything on this as well.

”My Old Pal” is a song that I wrote after passing Eric Clapton on the Hammersmith Bridge Road in London. We had not seen each other in over ten years. We stopped on the side of the road and did a little catching up. I went back to my home in Wargrave and wrote this song. It was recorded at my studio in Mississippi as well. Barry Swain is playing the lead guitar and Brady Blade is on drums and Darryl Johnson is playing bass. Buddy Miller is playing the tenor guitar on it.

”Perfect Strangers” was recorded at the original Westlake Village Recording Studios when they were first up and running. Steve Cropper is playing electric guitar and I am playing the acoustic. Jim Keltner is on drums and Tim Drummond is playing the bass guitar. Of course I played the keyboards as well. CoCo put her vocal and flute on afterwards.

”Don’t Pass Us By” I wrote in Ireland just after my dad passed. I saw a star in the cold clear night sky there that was traveling somewhere far off into the night. I imagined it to be him and was singing to him to “Don’t Pass Us By” without telling us what he had found out thru his crossing over. It was recorded at Dead Horse as well, at the same time as all of the rest of the songs that were recorded there.

”This Time” was recorded in Nashville. I was walking out the door and my ex-wife said to me in a very loud voice, ”You’ll be back! You’ll come crawling back to me next time!“. I told her that “This Time There Won‘t Be No Next Time“, and drove straight to Roger Greenaway‘s office there in Nashville and got him out of a meeting with this fresh picked song idea. He and I wrote it that afternoon and recorded it the next day. Two weeks later Tom Jones recorded it on his “Things That Matter Most“ record. It has Gene Chrisman playing drums with Mike Leech on bass and Bobby Woods is playing piano. All of whom were not credited on the record. It was an oversight on my part.

”You’re Love” is the first song that I wrote when I had first moved to Nashville. I decided to write a song that was nothing but lies about my ex-wife. It turned out to be one of the most beautiful songs that I ever wrote. I finally found my true love and one to whom this song has been dedicated, my CoCo.

”It’s About Time” was written at the beginning of the Gulf War. I did not watch the news for ten years after it started. I have yet to watch the news. I figured the best thing that I could do for this world was to write about it.

”Dorothy and John” is a song that was written about two people that I knew all of my life. He was a farmer and she was the mother of a very large household. They didn’t have indoor plumbing and John built the house himself. He plowed with two mules and Dorothy worked at the local doctor’s office when I was a little boy. They had a house full of girls and one boy. I used to go over and ride horses with their children when I was young. They didn’t have much in the way of material things but they were the richest people that I knew. There was more love between Dorothy and John than I had ever seen in my whole lifetime. They shared a very special love that I would not understand or find until I met CoCo. Theirs was spiritual love. As is ours. I wrote this song and sang it to them when I had finished it. Dorothy asked me as she lay on her death bed to play it at her funeral. I said that I would do that for her. She passed a few moments later. John couldn’t live without her and withdrew into a silent shell of the man that he used to be. He passed with Alzheimer’s shortly after Dorothy left. I can feel their presence as I write this. I always held those two people in a very special place in my heart. I still do. I recorded this song on a clear summer’s night on the porch of my studio that looked out over the valley towards the house where they used to live. You can hear the nightlife as I play my Big Mama’s dobro and sing for Dorothy and John.

Currently available as a download, a factory pressed cd edition will be available early September on the Domino label via CD Baby – Buy cd now via CD Baby here.
