The Zappa Family Trust are about to announce the release of “Lumpy Money,” a three-CD “audio documentary” covering the classic ‘Lumpy Gravy’ and ‘We’re Only In It For the Money’ albums. Originally due for release in late November 2008, this will be the first offering in an ongoing series celebrating the works of Frank Zappa.
Frank’s wife, Gail, has stated that those two records happen to be his masterworks. The main idea behind this new release, is how to educate the audience to understand what ‘Lumpy Gravy’ and ‘We’re Only in It for the Money’ were and are. And also what they’re part of.
The sumptuous “Lumpy Money” 3cd package will feature the two separate mixes of each album, which were done by Frank himself. Among the many highlights will be the first official release of the instrumental, Igor Stravinsky-influenced orchestral “ballet” version of “Lumpy Gravy” that Zappa recorded in 1967 for Capitol Records. It was revamped by the record company, who added rock musicians before eventually releasing it on MGM/Verve four months after “We’re Only in it For the Money” in 1968.
A second set will be released shortly after the “Lumpy Money” box. This will contain more music from those sessions including outtakes.
Further releases you can look forward to include a new version of “Cruising with Ruben and the Jets,” Frank Zappa’s third 1968 release, and a vintage live album from the Roxy in Los Angeles amongst many others.
