Dweezil Zappa will release the double CD set live album Return Of The Son Of… on 9 August 2010 [Cat No 0205552ERE]. The album is to be released on Edel’s international rock label, earMUSIC distributed in the UK & Republic of Ireland by Absolute via Universal. Zappa Plays Zappa are an outfit led by guitarist and vocalist Dweezil – Frank Zappa’s eldest son – and dedicated to performing some of the rock-oriented songs from the maverick composer and musician’s extensive back catalogue [Frank released more than 60 albums]. This is a real band, not a covers band.
The tracklisting is a collection of cuts taken from shows in Manchester, Chicago and New York in 2008 and 2009. Dweezil himself said: I was inspired to create a record that could accurately represent the project. I enjoy hearing the contrast within the compositions as well as all of the contrasting improvisational styles of the musicians. I hope you all enjoy listening to this record. We sure had fun playing the concerts.
In support of the album release, the Dweezil Zappa Plays Zappa band undertakes a 7 date UK tour: 21 July, Cambridge Corn Exchange; 22 July, Brighton Centre; 23 July, Wolverhampton Civic Hall; 24 July, High Voltage Festival, London; 25 July, Liverpool Summer Pops; 26 July, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall; 27 July, The Sage, Gateshead.
As a self-taught, incredibly prolific and fearless musical innovator and pioneer, Frank Zappa is impossible to categorise; many of his albums are considered essential in rock and jazz history. Dweezil’s aim with Zappa Plays Zappa is to ensure that people are exposed to a meaningful range of this truly eclectic artist, and that the music is still heard live. Live performance was a vital part of Frank Zappa’s musical life; on occasion, due to legal troubles with labels, it was his only source of income. Frank released many live albums and Dweezil’s Return Of The Son Of… is a truly worthy addition to the canon.
