E1 Music is set to release a new, live CD/DVD by legendary rock band Pretenders, “Pretenders: Live in London,” on February 9th, 2010. This electrifying, 100-minute release will be available as a CD with a Bonus DVD, as well as a standalone Blu-ray disc. The Pretenders — Chrissie Hynde, Martin Chambers, James Walbourne, Nick Wilkinson, and Eric Heywood — perform their biggest hits, including “Kid,”"Back On The Chain Gang,” “Middle Of The Road,” “Brass In Pocket” and many more. The DVD & Blu-ray feature 24 live tracks. “Pretenders: Live in London” captures the band’s energy at its purest form.

With millions of albums sold and their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame solidified, the Pretenders are a special band with a special place in history. “Pretenders: Live in London” captures one of their many electrifying performances from their 2009 world tour.

Produced by FogoLabs, the concert was filmed at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire by Grammy and Emmy Award winning producers and directors Pierre & Francois Lamoureux. The video was shot without the use of cranes, dollies or steadicams to create movement. Instead it is about the band, giving it all and not holding back any as they do any night when they hit the stage. The filmmakers’ objective was to stay out the way and capture it within the frame. The band played brilliantly that night and what can be heard & seen on this release is an honest reproduction of that moment in time. There are no overdubs made to the music and no fake crowd noises added. The editing is made to savor moments and the music was mixed and mastered for it to breathe.

JAMES BROWN ‘THE SINGLES VOL 8: 1972-1973′

January 30, 2010 by Your Way To Music
Filed under New Releases - CD's

Get ready for another exiting round of genius grooves from James Brown in The Singles Vol. 8: 1972-1973, a new 2-CD set in the acclaimed series that illuminates when JB became “The Godfather Of Soul.”

By this era, Black music was shifting – fast. “Sixties veterans Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield managed to evolve with the changing times, but relative newcomers Isaac Hayes, Al Green and Barry White loomed as the last of a dying breed,” writes compiler and former James Brown staffer Alan Leeds in the set’s liner notes. “The era of the stage shaking, Gospel-based Southern soul man was all but over… Established stars, like Ray Charles, Solomon Burke, Wilson Pickett and Jackie Wilson, couldn’t buy a hit record. Somehow, James Brown was still standing.”

Standing he was, rocking the globe with “Get On The Good Foot,” “There It Is” and “I Got Ants In My Pants”; cautioning youth with the antidrug tale “King Heroin;” helping deliver hits for his super-funky band The J.B.’s with irresistible tracks “Pass The Peas” and “Doing It To Death,” now an all-time classic. He also experimented: a pop duet with Lyn Collins, “What My Baby Needs Now Is A Little More Lovin’”; a remake of his hit “Think”; a rare cover of The Beatles’ “Something”; working with bandleader Fred Wesley on the score to Black Caesar, resulting in the hits “Down And Out In New York City” and “Sexy Sexy Sexy.”

Several rarities give the package extra collectability: an unreleased vocal version of “Hot Pants Road”; the single version of “Honky Tonk”; the U.K.-only release “I Know It’s True”; the rare mono promo mix of “Ants”; the rare single cover version of “Watermelon Man” by Wesley that features JB on drums; and a second re-cut of “Think.”

All tracks have been newly remastered from the analog singles masters, sounding better than ever – and several of the original single mixes are now on CD for the first time. The set is accompanied, as with previous releases, by a booklet thick with detailed track annotations, track-by-track anecdotes that serve as a James Brown career timeline, rare photos and reproductions of memorabilia from back in the day, and a sessionography complete with recording dates and band personnel.

THE CHIEFTANS AND RY COODER RELEASE ‘SAN PARICO’ COLLABORATION

January 30, 2010 by Your Way To Music
Filed under New Releases - CD's

SAN PATRICIO is the much-anticipated new collaboration between Ry Cooder (whose glittering career includes such milestones as Buena Vista Social Club and Paris, Texas) and the legendary Irish band The Chieftains.

The record takes as its inspiration the story of a group of 19th Century Irish immigrants to the USA, who were conscripted into the US army, in their war against Mexico. The men of the San Patricio brigade defected to the enemy side and fought with their fellow Catholics against the American army, before meeting a tragic end when the war was lost. The music which this meeting of cultures created can be heard to this day in Mexico, and San Patricio brings new focus to this amazing story.

Guest stars on this record include Ry Cooder, Liam Neeson, Linda Ronstadt and Mexican musicians Carlos Nunez, Lila Downs and Los Cenzontles. The music is a perfect fusion of the sounds of Ireland with the sounds of Mexico and the Southern USA (which can be found to this day in certain Mexican cities). The energy and the joy of discovery can be heard on every track where the musicians collaborate.

This record will receive its European premiere at Celtic Connections (Glasgow) in January 2010, to be followed by a UK tour in Summer 2010. The concert will be widely publicised, and Ry Cooder & The Chieftains will conduct media interviews throughout the build up to the March release. A documentary is in preparation which tells the story of the San Patricio Brigades, and the making of this incredible record.

Tracklisting:

1. La Iguana
2. La Golondrina
3. A la Orilla de un Palmar
4. Danza de Concheros

ROBIN TROWER’S TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY (1973) REISSUED ON CD LONG OUT OF PRINT IN THE U.S. ALBUM MAKES ITS RETURN IN REMASTERED FORM

Trower’s post-Procol Harum solo debut
Latest release from Iconoclassic Records arrives on April 6, 2010

Iconoclassic Records announces the reissue of Robin Trower’s seminal debut album TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY.

Following Robin Trower’s departure from Procol Harum he embarked upon a remarkable solo career with the aid of James Dewar (vocals and bass) and Reg Isidore (drums). The power trio’s debut release TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY has been remastered by Grammy-winning engineer Vic Anesini and features new liner notes that include a fresh interview with Robin himself.

When Trower left Procol Harum in 1972 and struck out on his own, there was no way of knowing he would become one of the most legendary and celebrated rock guitarists of his generation. There was no guarantee of commercial success or even that he could find a record deal. It was simply a move the guitarist felt he had to make out of creative necessity. “I was starting to write a lot more music for the guitar,” Trower recalls. “Procol Harum were a keyboard band, and musically I was going off in a different direction. I had to find my own way to pursue that, and so I decided to form my own band… I’d already been working with James Dewar in another band. I’d already heard that great voice, so when I decided I was gonna have a three-piece I knew that Jimmy was the one. And then Jimmy found Reg. Reg came and played with us, and we just hit it off.”

Initial offering TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY was produced by former Procol band mate Matthew Fisher and the album unleashed the full force of Trower’s incredible guitar playing. The Fender Stratocaster was his weapon of choice and the sheer fury with which Robin attacked uptempo rock and blues was astonishing considering that those elements of his playing had only been hinted at in his former band. The contrast of that was the subtlety and pure lyricism that was displayed on less aggressive materiel like “Daydream,” an FM radio staple from back in the day. “I think the material is still potent, a lot of it,” Robin says. “I’ve always felt if anything is my strength, it is my compositional ability. ‘Hannah’ in particular is one of my all-time favorite tracks.”

Released in May 1973, TWICE REMOVED FROM YESTERDAY was a success both critically and commercially. It charted for twenty-four weeks, peaking at #106, and earned a Gold record. This is the album that paved the way to Bridge Of Sighs and superstardom. The Iconoclassic release is augmented by “Take A Fast Train,” the B-side of the album’s single “Man Of The World.”

LOU REED’S METAL MACHINE TRIO UK & EUROPEAN TOUR STARTS APRIL 2010

January 28, 2010 by Your Way To Music

Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio UK & European April 2010 Tour

Coincides with the digitally remastered edition release of Reed’s 1975 seminal album ‘Metal Machine Music’ – released in 5.1 Surround Sound on double vinyl, Blu Ray & DVD Audio.

Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio: MM3 will be performing what is being described as “A Night of Deep Noise” that features Lou Reed on processed and unprocessed guitars, Ulrich Krieger on tenor sax and live-electronics, and Sarth Calhoun on continuum and live processing – a collaborative affair that will see all three musicians improvise music and make soundscapes. The Metal Machine Trio originally debuted at the REDCAT Theatre in Los Angeles in October 2008.

Each concert will feature no songs and no vocals. The trio will utilise guitars, saxophones, continuum, plus an array of electronic treatments that will venture into deep acoustic space. The collaboration will draw on new music, free jazz, avant-rock, noise and ambient in a set of intense conceptual pieces and intuitive improvisations.

The Metal Machine Trio concerts will be influenced and inspired by Lou Reed’s seminal 1975 album Metal Machine Music. The concerts won’t duplicate the original album but will instead opt for entirely new unique music, noise and soundscapes.

Lou Reed and Ulrich Krieger originally met each other in 2002 for the premiere of Krieger’s transcription and arrangement of Metal Machine Music – Reed’s seminal guitar feedback epic, performed by the Berlin-based chamber orchestra Zeitkratzer. Reed was so impressed with Ulrich’s transcription, that he flew to Berlin to perform guitar with Zeitkratzer’s live interpretation of the album.

To coincide with the UK and European tour dates, Lou Reed will release a newly re-mastered edition of the original 1975 Metal Machine Music album on 180 gram double gatefold vinyl, Audio DVD and Blu-ray. Each format features a stereo reproduction of the original quadraphonic master, playable on home theatre systems.

The re-mastered edition of the album will be released domestically in the UK first week in April 2010, and will coincide with the UK and European tour dates. Further info about the re-mastered edition of the 1975 album can be found here – www.loureed.com/metalmachinemusic.

Lou Reed on the re-mastered edition of Metal Machine Music:
“The original. The one that started it all. Noise Rock. Industrial Road. Underground for years, it survived on the power of the idea. No key. No Vocals. No set rhythm. Feedback forever. Supervised by Lou Reed and faithfully re-mastered to the last squeal. The out of print “Quad” has been replicated for all formats including a perfect vinyl version playable on your stereo turntable with the original rear sections moved to the centre of the front left speakers. It’s worth getting a turntable to hear this. I myself bought a Linn to celebrate the great sound and am playing it through Wilson Watts and Puppies. Here it as we did on Scott Hull’s Duntechs. Straight from the original Bob Ludwig tapes. An act of love for an act of sound.”

‘Lou Reed’s Metal Machine’ Line-up:

Lou Reed – Electric & Processed Guitars & Mini Continuum
Ulrich Krieger – Saxophone & Electronics
Sarth Calhoun – Live Processing & Continuum Fingerboard

Reed released his first suite of electronic mediation music, Hudson River Wind Meditations, on the Sounds True label in 2007. In late 2008 Reed released a new album of live electronic music called Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Trio: The Creation of The Universe, which inspired two extremely well, received performances by the MM3 Trio in New York in April of 2009. The CD is available for sale through his website www.loureed.com.

Currently Reed is working several projects including collaboration with artist Lorenzo Mattioti, who created a graphic novel based on Lou’s album, The Raven. ULRICH KRIEGER – BIOGRAPHY

Ulrich Krieger is a composer, performer, improviser and experimental rock musician. His main instruments are saxophones, clarinets, didgeridoo and electronics. He calls his style of playing “acoustic electronics”, using sounds that appear to be electronic, but are produced on acoustic instruments and then sometimes electronically treated, blurring the borders between the fields. Krieger transcribed Lou Reed’s (in)famous Metal Machine Music for chamber ensemble and works with groups like Text of Light (with Lee Ranaldo) and zerfall–gebiete (with Thomas Koner) between experimental rock, ambient and contemporary composition.

Born 1962, in Freiburg, Germany, he lived in Berlin 1983–2007 with longer residencies in the USA and Italy 1991–97. In September 2007 he moved to California, where he is professor for composition and experimental sound practice at the California Institute for the Arts. He studied classical saxophone, composition, electronic music and musicology at the Manhattan School of Music (NYC), the Universität der Künste (Berlin) and the Freie Universität (Berlin), as well as pursuing independent studies and research in the didgeridoo and Australian aboriginal music and culture.

Krieger has worked with Lou Reed, Lee Ranaldo, Phill Niblock, David First, Thomas Köner, Alan Licht, Michiko Hirayama, Witold Szalonek, Mario Bertoncini, Miriam Marbe, Seth Josel, Zbigniew Karkowski, Merzbow, performing in Europe, America, Asia and Australia. His works have been performed by California EAR Unit, Zeitkratzer, KontraTrio, Soldier String Quartet, Wandelweiser Ensemble.

Krieger received grants from the German DAAD program, the Darmstadter Summer Courses for New Music, the city of Berlin and many others and was a Composer-In-Residence at Villa Aurora (Los Angeles), Villa Serpentara (Rome), German Research Centre Venice (Italy), University of East Anglia (England), the City of Bologna (Italy) and the Music Centre North Queensland (Australia). He’s released over 50 CDs of original compositions, improvisations, with his groups and as a collaborator with many musicians. www.ulrich-krieger.de

SARTH CALHOUN – BIOGRAPHY

Sarth Calhoun is a studio composer and electronic alchemist operating out of Brooklyn, NY. In live performance he practices improvised audio manipulation, transforming the sounds of the instruments around him.

He is a beta tester for the Symbolic Sound Kyma system. Much of his work focuses on the analogous relationship between pitch and rhythm, and he claims to have invented a new kind of synthesis, which he controls from a Continuum Fingerboard. In addition to performing and recording with Lou Reed, he is the mastermind behind post electronic trio Lucibel Crater.

JAKOB DYLAN NEW ALBUM ‘WOMEN AND COUNTRY’

January 28, 2010 by Your Way To Music
Filed under New Releases - CD's

New album set for release on April 6th marks reunion with producer T Bone Burnett and features guest vocals from Neko Case & Kelly Hogan

Jakob Dylan will release his sophomore solo album, Women and Country, on Columbia Records on April 6th, 2010. Soulful yet striking and ripe with sublime beauty, Women and Country is the follow up to the artist’s 2008 critically acclaimed debut, Seeing Things. This new collection finds him reuniting with acclaimed Grammy and Golden Globe winning producer T Bone Burnett (Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Crazy Heart), who produced the Wallflowers’ 1996 breakthrough album Bringing Down the Horse. On the release, Jakob is also joined by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, who provide back-up vocals to 8 of the album’s 11 tracks.

“I’m so happy to be collaborating with Jakob at this exciting and vital time in his life as an artist,” said T Bone Burnett. “I think this new album is an important work from a great musician.”

Recorded in Los Angeles, CA, Women and Country is the full realization of a journey Jakob Dylan began on his previous solo release Seeing Things, which hearkens back to the timeless artistry of American roots music and country blues masters. Seeing Things garnered significant critical praise for Dylan including The Los Angeles Times who called him “a gifted storyteller” and USA Today who said the release was “an evocative acoustic album that reveals the poetic grace of his lyrics and the maturity and moving power of his voice.” On Women and Country Jakob reaches new majestic heights with his voice and song-writing that are as distinct as. This, coupled with T Bone Burnett’s haunting production and the stirringly rich vocals by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan, creates a powerful and melancholic experience for the listener.

Backing Jakob Dylan up on the album’s 11 songs are T Bone Burnett’s s acclaimed group of musicians including Dennis Crouch (bass), Jay Bellerose (drums), David Mansfield (fiddle & mandolin), Marc Ribot (guitar), Keefus Ciancia (keyboards), Greg Leisz (pedal steel), Darrell Leonard (trumpet), Ira Nepus (trombone) and George Bohanon (horns). Standout tracks include the opener “Nothin’ But the Whole Wide World,” which sets the tone of the album, the pensive ballad “Down on Our Own Shield,” “Everybody’s Hurting,” which showcases Jakob and Neko’s moving harmonies and “Truth for a Truth” that features great guitar work from Marc Ribot.

JOE BONAMASSA SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM ‘BLACK ROCK’

Produced By Kevin Shirley, Album Features Duet With B.B. King

Bonamassa Will Tour the U.S., U.K., Europe, Russia, Japan and Australia Throughout 2010

Just awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the U.K.’s prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, blues-rock guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his tenth full-length solo album, Black Rock, on March 23, 2010. Bonamassa’s sixth release on his own J&R Adventures imprint, the disc re-teams him with producer Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), who most recently produced 2009′s The Ballad of John Henry, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Blues Chart in February of last year. The album release will be followed by a multi-country tour taking Bonamassa to the U.S., U.K., Europe, Russia, Japan and Australia.

Black Rock was recorded at, and named for, Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. “With this album, we wanted to explore a ‘world’ feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it’s by no means a ‘world’ album. We wanted Joe’s usual youthful and energetic tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino,” said Shirley. Bonamassa adds, “It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. It’s youthful, like going back to your childhood.”

Joe Bonamassa has signed up blues legend B.B. King for a duet on his new album. The song they perform together is a rendition of the Willie Nelson-penned song, “Night Life,” which appeared on King’s 1967 album Blues Is King. Shirley says about the experience, “This is a rollicking Stonesy-vibe version of the Willie Nelson song on which B.B. King duets with Joe, both vocally and on his famous Lucille guitar. What a joy and an honor to work with the legend who is possibly the pivot point and unifying musician between blues and rock.”

Other tracks appearing on Black Rock include Jeff Beck’s “Spanish Boots,” Leonard Cohen’s poetic “Bird On A Wire,” Otis Rush’s “Three Times A Fool,” Bobby Parker’s “Steal Your Heart Away,” Blind Boy Fuller’s “Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind,” John Hiatt’s “I Know A Place,” and James Clark’s “Look Over Yonder’s Wall,” as well as the originals “When The Fire Hits The Sea,” “Wandering Earth,” “Athens To Athens,” and “Blue and Evil.”

2009 was a big year for Bonamassa which saw him play to a sold out crowd at London’s Royal Albert Hall, arguably the most prestigious concert venue in the world. Adding to the excitement, Eric Clapton joined him on stage for a joint-performance of Clapton’s hit “Further On Up The Road.” Shortly after, Bonamassa released a 2-DVD live set – Joe Bonamassa – Live From The Royal Albert Hall – which captures the night in full for posterity, and for all the fans that couldn’t be among the roughly 5,000 concertgoers filling the seats.

Last year also marked Bonamassa’s twentieth year as a professional musician, a huge achievement for a performer just into his 30s. Recently, he was named Best Blues Guitarist in Guitar Player Magazine’s 2009 Readers’ Choice Awards for the third consecutive year. He is a spokesperson for the Blues Foundation’s respected Blues In The Schools program, volunteering his time during tours to speak with groups of high school students about the first pure American music form. Recently, he was chosen by Channel One, the largest in-school news network, to host an ongoing segment called “Know Your Roots with Joe Bonamassa” in which he traces the musical roots of Channel One’s weekly “Hear It Now” featured artist.

And, 2010 has already started with a bang – Guitar World dubbed Bonamassa “The Blues Rock Titan” and his song, “Lonesome Road Blues,” is a part of Guitar Hero V’s New Blues Masters Track Pack. Keeping with his blues roots but fluently moving between rock n’ roll and international sounds, 2010 is not only a new decade but a new era for Bonamassa.
