JOHN MAYALL ‘THE 70th BIRTHDAY CONCERT’ ON BLUE-RAY WITH EXTRAS

John Mayall - 70th Birthday Concert

On 29 June 2009, Eagle Rock Entertainment release “The 70th Birthday Concert” [Cat No ERBRD5032] from John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers and Friends. Liverpool’s King’s Dock on 19 July 2003 was the venue for a long awaited and much anticipated reunion between Eric Clapton and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. The occasion was both a celebration of John Mayall’s 70th year and a fundraiser for Unicef. This Blu-ray shows the show in all its glory. Eagle was the first visual music company to embrace High Definition and their commitment to the new technology continues with new additions to their Blu-ray catalogue.

Also invited to the party were former Bluesbreaker and Rolling Stone Mick Taylor and veteran trombonist Chris Barber. Eric Clapton appears on eight of the nineteen numbers performed, with Mick Taylor guesting on a further six. If you’re a lover of the blues it doesn’t get much better than this. The show ran for around two and a half hours and the film is now presented here in its entirety for the first time. Thus, the Bonus Features on this Blu-ray release include three tracks from the concert that had to be cut from the original DVD issue for space reasons [Grits Ain’t Groceries, Jacksboro Highway and California]. The release also features an interview with John Mayall.

ORNETTE COLEMAN IS THIS YEAR’S MELTDOWN FESTIVAL DIRECTOR FOR JUNE 2009

March 29, 2009 by Your Way To Music

Ornette Coleman, saxophonist, violinist, metaphysician has been announced as director of this year’s Meltdown festival.

Coleman pioneered the idea of improvising without chord changes in the late-1950s, giving birth to the free jazz revolution and forever changing the musical landscape. From landmark releases in his early career including The Shape of Jazz to Come, Free Jazz and This Is Our Music to the award-winning Sound Grammar in 2006, he has innovated and challenged convention throughout his entire career.

His radical, uncompromising approach to his art has made him a hero to generations of avant-garde artists from John Coltrane, John Zorn and Pat Metheny to Leonard Bernstein, Frank Zappa, Mike Patton, Patti Smith, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Spiritualized and Lou Reed.

One of the most anticipated music events of the year, Meltdown offers a guest director the chance to curate their own personal festival, revealing their interests and influences.

The festival’s eclectic mix of music, art, performance and film brings together a diverse range of artists, resulting in unique collaborations and historic one-off events. Now in its 16th year, the illustrious list of Meltdown directors includes David Bowie, Patti Smith, Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave, John Peel and Massive Attack.

The line-up is to be announced in the coming weeks.

Chickenfoot – Biography

Rarely has a band come freighted with such expectation and promise than the new outfit that calls itself Chickenfoot.

Yes, you read correctly – Chickenfoot. Say that name again, just to get used to its sound. Chickenfoot.

It’s a silly name for a band – - and album – - that kicks a donkey’s ass six ways to Sunday and back again. Maybe that’s because long before the four men who comprise Chickenfoot came together they already filled the pages of rock history with enough individual mind-blowing chapters to boggle the mind.

The news that they’ve pooled their inordinate talents to one collective whole quickly spread across the Internet last year (and perhaps that crazy name helped just a little). The fact that they’ve succeeded artistically beyond anyone’s wildest dreams (except perhaps their own) is all the more reason to celebrate.

First, let’s consider the stellar line-up. There’s Joe Satriani, he of guitar god status, a dream born on the fateful day of September 18, 1970. It was the day Jimi Hendrix died, and it was the same day that Satriani, upon hearing the news, quit his high school football team and decided, at age 14, to devote his life to the electric guitar.

Interesting, what Satriani wanted more than anything was to be part of a big-time rock band fronted by a larger-than-life singer. He bounced around from group to group, but nothing hit the mark. Finally, he scraped money together and made a record of his solo guitar recordings. Not of this Earth attracted the attention of the guitar cognostici. But it was 1987′s Surfing with the Alien that made Satriani a household name. The album went Gold (it has since gone multi-Platinum) and went on to become a benchmark of its kind.

Since that time, Satriani has become one of the world’s most influential guitarists, releasing albums such as The Extremist and Super Colossal that have sold in the millions around the world. “It was all by accident,” the soft-spoken guitarist says. “I never mapped out a plan to be an instrumentalist.  I really wanted to be a part of a big vocal-oriented rock band. I had offers, but nothing seemed to fit. Everything seemed like career move…until Chickenfoot.”

So what about that singer? Well, that would be another guy who needs no introduction; Sammy Hagar, the original “Red Rocker”, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee for his tenure with Van Halen, who made his professional debut as the singer for the much-revered group Montrose during the early 70′s. As a replacement for the iconic David Lee Roth, Hagar faced what many would have viewed as an unenviable, if not impossible fast, but as Hagar sees it, “I decided I wasn’t going to get criticized for being the second singer in the band – - I was going to be the only singer in the band.”

Hagar carried the Van Halen brand to new heights, and together they scored a string of No. 1 albums and sold tens of millions of albums. “I upheld the artistry of the band,” reflects Hagar, “and brought them to new places they normally wouldn’t have gone. That, to me, is what I really accomplished in that band.”

Hagar wasn’t looking to form a new group in his post-Van Halen career. “I really wasn’t looking to have a real band, but when I got involved with these guys, only a fool would say, ‘No, I’m not going to do this.’ The minute we started jamming it was obvious, like, ‘This is something that needs to be heard.’”

A great band is nothing without a great rhythm section, and Chickenfoot has one of the best in the two-man team of bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Chad Smith.

As a founding member (and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer) of Van Halen, Anthony laid the bedrock for which guitar genius Eddie Van Halen could fly. More than that, he provided a signature style of background vocal that became an intrinsic part of that band. “A total fluke,” the good-natured bassist humbly asserts. “I was just doing what came naturally.”

Hagar sees Anthony’s abilities differently – “Michael keeps the band going. Listen, he’s never going to get the kind of credit he deserves – - he played next to Eddie Van Halen. Hell, Jack Bruce didn’t get much credit compared to Eric Clapton – - that’s just the nature of things. Mikey held down the fort, and he still does.”

Aiding Anthony in holding down the fort is Chad Smith, drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who have, since Smith joined the group in the late Eighties, gone from cult faves to a worldwide force.  Heretofore thought of as a “funk/alternative” drummer, Smith gets to rock hard with Chickenfoot, and the percussion explosion he creates might come as a surprise to those who only know of his work from tracks like Under The Bridge.

“The guy’s from Detroit, for God’s sake!” says Hagar. “He can play the hell out of funk, but he’s a rocker.  He plays hard, man. You could put one mic in a room with Chad, and you can hear all the parts of his kit – - he’s hard, but he’s balanced. The band wouldn’t exist without his groove.”

The members of Chickenfoot admit that the band came together almost by accident, a result of jams held at Hagar’s club, Cabo Wabo Cantina, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

“We were just having fun,” recalls Michael Anthony. “After Sammy and I left Van Halen, we’d get together with musicians, and certain people seemed to really gel. Chad came down and we got on well with him. Gradually, we started talking about doing something more serious, but we needed a guitarist. Somebody smokin’ – somebody who could take us to the Promised Land.”

Enter Satch, who hooked up with Hagar, Anthony and Smith and felt “an immediate connection unlike anything I’d ever experienced before.” To Satriani, who had almost abandoned his lifelong dream of being a part of a “big-time rock band,” here was his chance, and here were his band mates. “After just a few songs, it became stunningly obvious that we shared an overall musical agenda. The only question was could we make a great album?”

The band answered that question last fall when they hunkered down with the illustrious producer Andy Johns at George Lucas’ Skywalker Studios and knocked out a batch of songs that sets a new standard for rock music in the new millennium.

From the thunderous, ominous opening strains of Avenida Revolution (detailing the bloody drug wars in Tijuana, in which Hagar makes his feelings come through his skin) to the album closer, the shimmering rock ballad Future’s in the Past,“Chickenfoot” is a firebomb of a record, the likes of which we haven’t heard in ages.

The band kicks and snorts their way through a passel of take-no-prisoners rockers like Soap on a RopeSexy Little ThingOh Yeah and My Kind of Girl.

These are the kinds of songs I could never do on my own,” says Satriani, “I needed a band like this to make those songs come alive.” The band explores mature themes on songs such as Runnin’ Out, about a world stretched to the breaking point to Learning to Fall, perhaps the most poignant love song Hagar has ever written lyrics for. As both a vocalist and songwriter, Hagar’s intensity and forcefulness are on vivid display on ”Chickenfoot”.

“I write what comes to mind,” the singer says. “I’m not bound by anything subject-wise. I’m inspired by the music. When I heard the music Joe was going for, it made me reach, it made me stretch. I think it made me sing in a way that I normally wouldn’t have done. We seem to have that kind of effect on each other.”

Satriani agrees. “People have this idea of what this band is about, or what Sammy Hagar is about as a lyricist and a vocalist. The thing is that we manage to get each guy to up his game in a non-confrontational way. When I play with Chickenfoot, I find myself wanting to give them more all the time. I don’t hold anything back. I think the rest of the guys feel the same way.”

That Satriani unleashes sheets of shred magna is, of course, a given, but what’s interesting is, as individualistic and recognizable as his talents are – - and this is true of all the players – - they transform in a strange and beautiful way on “Chickenfoot”.

Likewise, Anthony and Smith, channel past heroes. For Anthony it’s Electric Flag bassist Harvey Brooks. For Smith it’s Zeppelin’s John Bonham. Together, they perform something of an astonishing balancing act, dispending performances that meet at the intersection of Heavy and Nimble. This is what a rhythm section does, drives the band in forceful, creative ways. Listen to Chickenfoot and you’ll hear what a true rhythm section sounds like.

By the way, did we mention they have a weird name?

Young’s manager Elliot Roberts told a news conference at the South By Southwest Festival in Texas that the project was finally ready for release and would be with us early in June.

The multi-disc set will be released on Blu-Ray, DVD (both 10 disc) and CD (8 disc) and a number of variations of those formats costing from around £200. The CD box contains the previously released Fillmore East and Massey Hall concerts as well as six more discs containing a mixture of live and studio material.

People that purchase the Blu Ray edition of the box will be able to download and update their Archive “filing cabinet” with new material as and when Young adds it.

After working together on the New York Dolls’ influential debut in 1973, the group reunited with producer Todd Rundgren this winter to record their fourth studio album,Cause I Sez So, set for a May 4th U.K. release on Atco Records (U.S. release is May 5th).

Recorded at Utopia Sound Studio in Kauai, Hawaii, the album features 11 original compositions and a new version of Trashthat originally featured on their milestone 1973 debut album. “It was amazing working with Todd again, and I think we were able to evoke the special sound of our first album and drag it by the hair into the present,” says front man Johansen.

Prior to the album’s release, the New York Dolls-David Johansen (vocals); Sylvain Sylvain (guitar); Steve Conte (guitar); Brian Delaney (drums); and Sami Yaffa (bass)-will appear at the South By Southwest (SXSW) music conference and festival in Austin, Texas in mid March.

The New York Dolls swaggered onto the New York music scene in the early ’70s, influencing a generation with its subversive mix of high-decibel rock and high-heeled androgyny. The original band recorded a pair of milestone records-New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974)-before breaking up in 1977.

The surviving members reformed the group in 2004 to much acclaim, but soon lost bassist Arthur Kane to leukemia. Two years later, Johansen and Sylvain reunited again to record the New York Dolls’ third studio album, One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This.

ZOMBIES LIVE ODESSEY AND ORACLE DVD

During March 2008, The Zombies performed their legendary 1968 psychedelic album “Odessey and Oracle” for the first time in 40 years since its original release. The band played three consecutive sold out concerts at the London Shepherds Bush Empire. One of these nights was filmed for DVD, which will be released in the UK on Monday 20th April by Red House, distributed by Absolute via Arvato.

The DVD coincides with The Zombies’ April 2009 Odessey and Oracle tour; the last time the milestone album will be performed in its entirety in the UK. The four concerts include Glasgow ABC (April 21), Bristol Colston Hall (April 23), Manchester Bridgewater Hall (April 24) and London Hammersmith Apollo (April 25).

Mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound and boasting an exclusive 2008 filmed interview with the entire band, the live DVD lovingly documents the historic night when the original members of The Zombies reunited to perform the premiere of ‘Odessey & Oracle’, preceded by a veritable banquet of Zombie connected material, from Argent hits to Colin Blunstone’s string quintet material from his beautiful album ‘One Year’.

The DVD begins with 8 tracks performed by ‘The Zombies’ Touring Band’, consisting of Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Jim and Steve Rodford, and Keith Airey, playing a collection of classic Zombies’ tracks prior to ‘Odessey…’, songs from Rod’s later band ‘Argent’ as well as Colin Blunstone solo material, augmented by a string Quartet.

After a short interval the four remaining original members of ‘The Zombies’ (Rod Argent, Colin Blunstone, Chris White, High Grundy) arrive on stage to perform landmark 1968 album ‘Odessey & Oracle’ in all it’s glory and, after an introduction from recording legend Al Kooper (The man responsible for ‘Odessey’s existence), kick off with ‘Care of Cell 44′, instantly letting you know you’re in for a treat with it’s beautifully escalating harmonies, excelling all expectations when experienced live. This is followed by many further highlights including the layered harmonies of ‘Maybe After He’s Gone’ and ‘Beechwood Park’, the soaring vocals during ‘Hung Up On A Dream’ and an amazing performance of ‘Time of the Season’ heralds a standing ovation before they close with their much loved debut hit ‘She’s Not There’.

The Shepherds Bush gigs were attended by the crème de la crème of rock royalty including Paul Weller, Robert Plant, Robyn Hitchcock, Snow Patrol and Garbage. This A-List audience confirmed the inspiration and influence the music has had on musicians from all generations.  Paul Weller bought tickets for all three nights, while the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl recently claimed that ‘Care of Cell 44′ changed his life.

The Zombies are back from the un-dead to resurrect ‘one of the best albums of the Psychedelic era’, perfect timing for a summer full of pure nostalgia and musical accomplishment. Their forthcoming UK tour will mark the very last time the band will perform this legendary album in its entirety in the UK.

“As their voices soar in the middle of ‘Hung Up On A Dream’, it’s real shivers-down-the-spine stuff……timeless” - The Independent

“You could hardly credit it had taken 40 years to reach this seminal moment, which deserves to be ranked beside Brian Wilson’s remarkable comeback for its impeccable artistry and uplifting power” - The Scotsman

Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley;
Combined running time for both DVDs is 169 minutes (nearly 3 hours!)

Worldwide sales of 1994 GRACE album continue to soar in 2008-2009:
• Australia – 6-times platinum
• France, Ireland, Belgium – all double-platinum
• UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand,
Denmark, and Czech Republic – all platinum
• U.S., Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal – all gold.

As a tribute to the enduring and expanding popularity and critical acclaim that continues to be devoted worldwide to Jeff Buckley more than a decade after his death, GRACE AROUND THE WORLD – to be issued in two separate multi-disc packages -provides the most comprehensive and exciting musical portrait of the artist seen to date.

Executive produced by Mary Guibert (Buckley’s mother), GRACE AROUND THE WORLD focuses on previously unreleased live performances circa 1994-95, in concert and television locales ranging from the U.S. and UK, to Germany, Japan and France (where Buckley was the #1 best-selling international catalog artist in 2008). Accompanying the 108-minute GRACE AROUND THE WORLD DVD will be an audio CD counterpart.

A special limited-edition deluxe package of GRACE AROUND THE WORLD will also contain the one-hour documentary DVD, Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley, thus totaling 169 minutes (nearly three hours) of Jeff Buckley footage for his fans. In advance of this summer’s 15th anniversary of the release of Grace, Buckley’s landmark debut album (August 1994), the two GRACE AROUND THE WORLD packages will be available at all physical and digital retail outlets starting June 2nd through Columbia/Legacy, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.

There are three components to the deluxe GRACE AROUND THE WORLD package.
First there is the DVD, GRACE AROUND THE WORLD, bearing witness to the fact that Buckley onstage was a transcendent force. In a unique concept, the main program of this DVD presents previously unreleased distinct versions of the songs from the Grace album, culled from a variety of television sources. These include 1994 U.S. shows at Howlin Wolf in New Orleans (“Dream Brother”) and the JBTV acoustic performance in Chicago (“Lover You Should Have Come Over,” the only previously released clip). The balance of the songs all date from 1995: the BBC’s Late Show in London (“Grace”); the tv show Live Aus Dem Sudbahnhof in Frankfurt, Germany (“So Real,” “Mojo Pin,” “What Will You Say”); MTV Japan (“Hallelujah”); MTV’s Most Wanted in London (“Eternal Life,” “Last Goodbye”); and MTV Europe’s coverage of the Eurokeenes Festival in Belfort, France (“Lilac Wine”).

(Note: Buckley’s rarely-performed Qawwali-influenced “What Will You Say” appears instead of Grace’s Benjamin Britten adaptation of “Corpus Christi Carol,” which Buckley did not perform on-tour.)
The GRACE AROUND THE WORLD DVD includes 33 minutes of bonus features. These begin with three songs performed in New York for MTV’s 120 Minutes (“Grace,” “So Real,” “Last Goodbye”), then “Vancouver” (from MTV’s Most Wanted in London), and conclude with the original music video for “Hallelujah” (directed by Ernie Fritz). In between are behind-the-scenes on-the-road segments for VH1′s Naked Café, and the Merri Cyr bus interview.

For those preferring to watch the concert footage without the interview segments that appear between songs, a “Just Play the Music” feature will enable the viewer to bypass the interview footage.
The second component of GRACE AROUND THE WORLD is an audio CD configuration of the 10 live song performances from the DVD, all previously unreleased on CD. The disc will also feature previously unreleased additional versions of “Grace” and “So Real” from a 1995 performance on MTV’s 120 Minutes.

The third component of GRACE AROUND THE WORLD is Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley, a one-hour DVD documentary created by Indie Filmmakers and fans of Jeff, Laurie Trombley (who was Jeff’s first fan mail reader/intern while in college) and Nyla Bialek Adams, and sanctioned by Mary Guibert. Included are rare performances and outtakes (culled from the Columbia Records archives), footage, and interviews with him. There are interviews with a variety of artists (painter, dancer, poets, singers, and so on) who pay tribute to Buckley’s influence on them. Interviews also include all three surviving members of the Jeff Buckley Band, friends, family, colleagues, DJ’s, producers, critics and fans.

Amazing Grace: Jeff Buckley travels from Sydney, New York and London, to Memphis, Montpellier, and Los Angeles, as it presents a very indie and intimate look at Buckley’s relationship to his music. The film has been screened 30 times over the past several years and has won numerous festival awards, including the Seattle Film Festival, San Francisco World Film Festival, CMJ, among others.
Finally, GRACE AROUND THE WORLD will include a liner notes booklet curated by Jeff’s former publicist Howard Wuelfing. The notes will be a montage of interviews with Mary Guibert, band members Michael Tighe (guitar, backing vocals), Mick Grondahl (bass), and Matt Johnson (drums), members of Buckley’s touring team, and press quotes from vintage tour reviews.

The magnitude of Jeff Buckley’s popularity around the world is underscored by the continuing best-selling sales of Grace in 2008-2009, with total worldwide sales over 3.4 million copies. Australia leads the tally at 6-times platinum. France, Ireland, Belgium have all logged double-platinum sales. The UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Denmark, and Czech Republic are all in the platinum column. And Grace is gold in the U.S. (over 800,000 copies sold), Sweden, Switzerland, and Portugal.

The centerpiece of GRACE AROUND THE WORLD is “Hallelujah,” the Leonard Cohen song that became a signature track for Jeff Buckley. The song went to #1 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs in March 2008 (his first #1), and was certified RIAA platinum on April 22nd, for sales over one million copies. It has been heard at countless crucial moments in movies and on such television shows as the season finales of The O.C., The West Wing, Third Watch, and Without A Trace. In the February 2009 issue of Blender magazine, “Hallelujah” was featured as that month’s “Greatest Song Ever” (a monthly feature).

In the UK, “Hallelujah” began to enjoy renewed commercial success as a digital download single in late 2008, when a version by X Factor winner Alexandra Burke and Buckley’s original studio version (from Grace, the best known version) hit #1 and #2 respectively on the UK Singles Chart. Each has sold hundreds of thousands of copies since then, making it the fastest-selling digital single in European history. Leonard Cohen’s original 1984 version of the song also hit the UK chart at #34. Back in 2005, it was named the 10th greatest Canadian song of all time in Chart magazine’s annual readers’ poll.
