GRAHAM NASH ‘REFLECTIONS’ 3CD BOX FROM RHINO
December 20, 2008 by Your Way To Music
Rhino celebrates Graham Nash’s career in style with Reflections, a three-CD boxed set that covers an incredible 40 year career in music with 64 songs; at least half of which are unreleased mixes, alternate versions and unissued tracks. This deluxe package will feature a 150-page booklet containing 75 classic and previously unpublished photos, and Graham Nash’s track by track notes.
‘Reflections’ runs in chronological order, spanning Nash’s recordings from 1967 to 2007, starting with a trio of singles he released with The Hollies in 1967: “On A Carousel,” “Carrie Anne” and “King Midas In Reverse.” A year later, he joined forces with David Crosby and Stephen Stills to record the classic Crosby Stills and Nash self-titled album. Not surprisingly, Reflections features several songs from that album and its follow-up, Deja Vu which also included Neil Young. Among the songs are “Pre-Road Downs,” “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House” and “Teach Your Children.” Reflections also includes a pot pourri of tracks from the group’s other albums: “Just A Song Before I Go,” “Wasted On The Way” and “Heartland.” After CSNY split, Crosby and Nash recorded a number of beautiful, and some would say neglected, albums as a duo. Reflections features several numbers from those albums including “Immigration Man,” the haunting “To The Last Whale,” “Jesus Of Rio” and several more.
The set closes with selections from Nash’s solo albums.
Due for release on 3 February 2009

NEW VERSION OF SPIRIT’S CALIFORNIA BLUES
December 16, 2008 by Your Way To Music
Filed under New Releases - CD's
California Blues was the last official release by Spirit, in late 1996. It was released just weeks before Randy California’s tragic death. The album was a compromise of sorts. It originally began as an out and out blues album, but then pop material and various bonus tracks and multiple overdubs were thrown into the mix at the last minute making it a little uneven.
California Blues Redux, revisits the project, but with aim of re- presenting a rawer blues-edged album. All the tracks used for this new version are superior remixes or alternate takes, and all have been remastered. The original non-blues bonus tracks have been removed and replaced with more appropriate material, such as the delicate instrumental “David,” the haunting slide-driven “Kind and Gentle Life” and a couple of impromptu jams between California and Matt Andes. The lone live track “Red House” has been removed in favor of the unreleased “Stone Lover.” As a bonus for fans there is a second live disc from shows in 1995 and 1996 which focuses on the blues material and highlights Randy’s improvisational skills with some lengthy exploratory jams , such as the 18 minute version of “Love from Here” and the 16 minute medley of “Fixing to Die, Gopal and Land of the Rising Sun”. These two discs highlight the fact that Randy was at the top of his game in 1996 writing great material and making great music.

DIANA ROSS EXPANDED EDITION OF ‘SURRENDER’

DEEP PURPLE’S STORMBRINGER 2CD REMASTER
December 10, 2008 by Your Way To Music
The Deep Purple Appreciation Society (DPAS) have announced the release of Deep Purple’s Stormbringer album. There will be a 2 disc limited slipcase edition with original quad 4.1 mixes and other goodies, including Glenn’s excellent remix work, video elements and more.
There is a double gatefold vinyl edition planned, also limited. These are available to pre-order from dpas mailorder (anyone who ordered before this was posted will automatically be shipped the 2xCD edition). Once the two disc Ltd Edition has gone, the title will be issued as a lower priced 1xCD regular edition with the album, remixes and a few other items. It looks like the old CD version is being deleted so if you prefer the softer CD transfer, and haven’t got this, best order sharpish. Glenn has contributed some text for the booklet, and a super big transparency of the original sleeve painting has been unearthed in America to use on the reworked sleeve. EMI say they have put Stormbringer back a couple of weeks to February 2009 due to scheduling pressure.

DEEP PURPLE LIVE AT LONG BEACH 1976 RE-ISSUED/REMASTERED
December 10, 2008 by Your Way To Music
This concert, first released as the On The Wings Of A Russian Foxbat bootleg, and issued officially on CD way back in 1995, is now being totally remastered from the original half inch tapes. It is generally regarded as one of the best Mk 4 concerts, with some great performances and over half the Come Taste album tracks included. The two bonus tracks from the original are retained but properly positioned at the end of side two so they do not spoil the running order.
It will appear first on the Sonic Zoom label in a limited edition digipak with a faithful reproduction of the old bootleg sleeve and a booklet. It can be pre-ordered at dpas mailorder. Expected Feb 2009, a regular jewel case version in a different cover should follow later in the year.

TEN CLUB PRE-SALE OF SUPER DELUXE BOX SET BEGINS NOW

Remaster of original Ten album + remix by producer Brendan O’Brien •
DVD of previously unreleased 1992 Pearl Jam MTV Unplugged performance with 5.1 surround sound audio remix • LP of the band’s 1992 “Drop in the Park” concert • Replica of Pearl Jam three-song demo cassette with Eddie Vedder’s original vocal dubs • Recreation of Eddie Vedder composition notebook • Never before seen memorabilia • Bonus tracks and more.
Ten, the debut album that sold 12 million copies and introduced the world to Pearl Jam in 1991, will be reissued in four (4) new and expanded editions. Pre-orders of the Super Deluxe Edition begin today, through the Ten Club atPearlJam.com. All four editions will be available for purchase on March 24, 2009. The reissue of Ten serves as the launch of a planned two-year catalogue re-release campaign leading up to the band’s 20th anniversary in 2011.
Each Ten package will include two versions of the album: the remastered version of the original album PLUS an accompanying remixed version done by the band’s long-time producer, Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Audioslave). Details on specific extras for each of the four packages are listed below.
“The band loved the original mix of Ten, but were also interested in what it would sound like if I were to deconstruct and remix it,” says producer Brendan O’Brien. “The original Ten sound is what millions of people bought, dug and loved, so I was initially hesitant to mess around with that. After years of persistent nudging from the band, I was able to wrap my head around the idea of offering it as a companion piece to the original – giving a fresh take on it, a more direct sound.”
TEN RE-DESIGN
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament, who served as the art director for the original Ten packaging, reprised his role for the reissues collaborating with designer, Andy Fischer, of Cameron Crowe’s Vinyl Films (Into the Wild soundtrack LP, Vanilla Sky soundtrack LP, Harold and Maude anniversary edition soundtrack LP).
“The goal was to assemble the ultimate fan-piece,” explains Fischer. “Something Pearl Jam lovers could pore over as they experience an indelible record all over again, in an entirely new way.”
“The original concept was about really being together as a group and entering into the world of music as a true band…a sort of all-for-one deal,” says Jeff Ament. “There were some elements of the original Ten artwork that didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, due to time constraints. With this reissue, we’ve been able to take our time and invest resources into making the design the way we had originally intended.”
REPLICA OF PEARL JAM 3-SONG DEMO CASSETTE IN SUPER DELUXE EDITION
In the process of digging through his archives for this project, Ament came across an old cassette marked “Momma-Son” – the fabled original Pearl Jam demo tape featuring the first recorded versions of “Alive,” “Once” and “Footsteps.” Ament and guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready had recorded instrumental tracks of these songs to help solicit a singer for their newly formed band. Mutual friend – and then Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer – Jack Irons suggested they send the tape down to San Diego surfer and little-known singer Eddie Vedder.
Completely inspired by what he heard from these musicians that he then only knew by name, Vedder quickly wrote lyrics, put these vocals to the music tracks and shipped the tape back to Seattle. Upon hearing how Vedder had transformed the songs, Ament, Gossard and McCready asked him to come up to Seattle so they could meet and have an official “tryout” together. Shortly thereafter, Pearl Jam was born. (A replica of the “Momma-Son” cassette will be included in the Super Deluxe Edition of Ten.)
Jeff Ament describes the experience of re-visiting that tape with singer Eddie Vedder:
“I think the first time that Ed or I had opened any of those boxes was a few weeks ago. I knew that the original ‘Momma-Son’ cassette was somewhere, but I hadn’t listened to it in 17, 18, 19 years. It was cool to sit down and play it for the first time with Ed and see his reaction. And to find that 90% of it stayed exactly the same as what ended up on the record. A lot of elements were identical. There was some energy flying around at that point even from 1,300 miles away from Seattle to San Diego.”
